ByteDance used TikTok to track my location — and the locations of two of my colleagues — to try to find our sources. We reported on this back in October, but kept things vague to protect sources. Today ByteDance admitted it, so we can say much more:

I would really like to increase my network in #Mastodon. Please help me connect with people in #ecology #Evolution #entomology #pollinators #bees. Please share @jessicalwarelab @CorrieMoreau @alexwild Thanks!

On the other hand, in a system where bail is illegal, you will be charged, and told that your court date is two years from now, and that you must appear on that court date, and that if you don't appear you will be fined or arrested... but that you can go home today.
You will leave jail, go to collect the evidence of your innocence, and give it to your public defender. Your public defender will tell the DA "You will lose in 2 years. Give up now." The DA will say "True.🫤" And *drop the case*.🤯
Imagine you are a Black man with a wife and 2 kids living in the Bronx. You and your wife both earn minimum wage. You've never been arrested, never committed a crime, don't do drugs, never been in a gang.
One day, you're arrested and falsely accused of a crime. You're sent to Rikers. There is definitive proof that you were somewhere else at the time of the crime. DA says they're going to charge you. You can't afford bail, or an attorney.
You'll be in jail for up to *2 years* prior to trial.
Heh. Nothing is trending on twitter. And there's not centralized discussion about even that because nothing is trending.
Now did it break? Or did it get turned off because of the run on Tesla? #twitterexodus #twitterbroken #trending
#FirstAmendment #FreeSpeech It’s time for me to update by “Free Speech Tropes” post, written previously for Popehat and Atlantic, that identifies common slogans/cliches/arguments about the First Amendment that are wrong or misleading — like “fire in a crowded theater” and “hate speech is not free speech.” I have some new ones to add to the mix (like “it’s in the school handbook so it’s not a First Amendment issue”) but taking suggestions for other common bad arguments/tropes/slogans.
💫 To celebrate the end of the year, I want to share my article 'The discreet habits of subtle violence: an approach to the experiences of women full professors in neoliberal times', published this year in Gender and Education's special issue entitled 'Gender-based violence in educational contexts'.

🎁 In the first comment I will share some free e-prints, and let me know if you need a copy.

Great list of Mastodon resources for educators by @mguhlin: https://www.mguhlin.org/p/fediverse-tootorials-including-mastodon.html #EduTooter
NOT Twitter!
If journalists want people to read and follow their work, they should make the effort to engage with their followers instead of acting like they’re pieces of furniture in the room.
“One journalist who is on Mastodon noted that there is also a cultural difference between the way people often behave on Twitter and expectations on Mastodon.

I’ve been reading a lot of “what I learned this year takes” and many seem to revolve around a specific theme, efforts at separating mediocre, unremarkable white tech dudes from their shitty behaviors…like “yeah, they’re ‘problematic’ but boy they make a great product/service
While everyone else has to prove they're “right”, these dudes get the benefit of everyone else also having to prove them “wrong”

Curious to know which books and/or organizations shaped your #SocialJustice and #RacialEquity lens
Looking at this book list from https://antiraciststarterpack.com/
The first book I read on #RaceConscious perspectives was #RaceMatters from #CornelWest
I typically recommend #HowToBeAnAntiRacist by #IbramXKendi to folks who are new to learning about #antiracism and #WeDoThisTilWeFreeUs by #MariameKaba for folks who are learning about #CommunityOrganizing with an #abolitionist lens
The orgs I recommend following to learn the basics around social justice issues are #MovementForBlackLives #M4BL #NDNCollective #ShowingUpForRacialJustice #SURJ #CriticalResistance and so many others
Journalist profiles on the Washington Post can now include Mastodon links. Here's what it looks like: https://www.washingtonpost.com/people/drew-harwell/
If asking questions can get you banned from Twitter, then all journalists should be aiming to get banned from Twitter.
It's a badge of honor.
You can be a Nazi or white supremacist on Twitter but you can’t ask a question that annoys Elon Musk? That's pretty telling.
If you're NOT getting banned from Twitter, you're doing it wrong! https://sfstandard.com/politics/veteran-ca-journalist-locked-out-of-musks-twitter-for-asking-question/
I've been very frustrated with this entire conversation because I think there are two big assumptions that are taken without examination:
1. Quote-boost was a significant *cause* of conflict on twitter that is less present here. Decisions about things like if people can use quote-boost can be effective protective measures.
2. Less conflict is *always* objectively good and this should guide decisions about UI.
@ZingerLearns @dougholton @edutooters @ACM I have been crying out in the wilderness for educators to find smaller instances for this reason. Let the fediverse deal with the capitalistic self promoters and build a PLN of truly aligned interests. This was my motivation for starting a computer science education focused instance.
I don't believe that computer science educators are as well served being on mastodon.soclal or even mastodon.acm.org. edutooters group can serve as the glue among us.
