The moral panic about AI & cheating is the same as the panic over proctoring & cheating is the same as the panic that led to plagiarism detection software.
People, the vast majority of students DO NOT want to cheat. They want to learn. The lack of trust undermines education.

I love this idea of trauma informed design by @herahussain
In our specific context of #OpenScience: How can the trauma's of academia inform how we create truly different spaces?

Home Free: Too much school at home, too much work from home, and not enough school in school. Let’s reestablish some boundaries, "... it remains maddeningly unclear what homework actually does for kids.”

A strange thing that is currently happening: the House will shortly vote on their rules of operation for this Congress, but there is apparently a 3 page addendum that is secret? I guess if one were intending to vote no, it doesn’t matter that there’s hidden content and similar if one were going to vote yes no matter what. But this sure feels wrong. Unclear when or if the addendum will be made officially available. (One member claims to have a copy, but has not shared it)

Ah yes
That feeling when famous white men who you had to block for wanting to have a conversation justifying surveillance tech in a thread with actual evidence of racism and human rights violations, decide to misspell your name and call your thoughts on throttling children's use of a technology that clearly meant for those over 18 an "all out rejection" of it.
Call me a luddite I guess

I think many of us in tech underestimate the damaging potential of #ChatGPT. This case is fairly innocuous, but it’s a good example of how ChatGPT’s replies don’t represent real knowledge. It’s just a fancy Bullshit Generator™.
The problem is, to the general public (especially kids) it looks like ChatGPT knows what it’s talking about. It sounds trustworthy. People will trust it, and the potential consequences are far worse than a wasted library trip.

I agree, and I also think this release serves as an incredible marketing effort for AI in general at a time of serious techlash.
So... question
#ChatGPT is a "research preview"
To me, this signals a few things
1. It is not the fully baked
2. It could go away at any second
3. They are tracking all usage for product development
Am I leaving anything out? And are there other examples of tech being released this way? This kind of release feels unique to me.
