Can we talk about all the ways #ChatGPT isn’t at all like a calculator?
I’ll start
You have to give a company a bunch of your data to use it
It randomly gives you wrong answers
The relationship with meaning is just different with words than it is with numbers
It is a half baked experiment on the public
What else 🤔
“A prominent pro-reform law professor in Saudi Arabia is facing the death penalty for alleged crimes including having a Twitter account and using WhatsApp to share news” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jan/15/saudi-arabian-academic-on-death-row-for-using-twitter-and-whatsapp
Can we stop using the term "hallucinating" for #AI that gives false answers? Hallucinations are ungrounded perceptions based on disembodied sensation, which implies when an AI gives a correct answer it is grounding its perception in embodied sensation. But #ChatGPT can't sense anything. It just finds statistical correlations among conclusions made by beings with real bodies (us).
JK Rowling has explicitly said, multiple times, that people continuing to buy Harry Potter stuff is proof that they agree with her transphobia
Stop giving this bigot money

Sure, the media is a factor in "violence".
A six year old shooting an adult? I daresay the prime factor is a six year old having access to a gun.
The standard playbook of doubt is to confound the issue by including other factors.
E.g. The tobacco lobby, who sponsored a swathe of studies arguing for other factors for cancer. This delayed sensible health policy by at least 20 years.
Ditto the fossil fuel lobby.
@crecente @publichealth @edutooters
That you would use a horrific current event to stat a conversation about a field you're familiar with is completely understandable.
But ultimately, by associating general considerations on cultural factors for violence to a particular gun-related event, you are unwittingly (I hope) running the exact doubt playbook that has done so much harm in other fields, and still precluded meaningful gun control in the U.S.
I just do not understand how "beta" self-driving features are allowed to be released on public highways and roads. There are so many other drivers on the road who have NOT opted into the beta test but who are forced to take part. This footage from the Tesla pile-up that happened on the Bay Bridge in San Francisco/Oakland the day that the "Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta" was launched is maddening: https://theintercept.com/2023/01/10/tesla-crash-footage-autopilot/

So I found a good productive use for ChatGPT and my instruction relating to science teaching yesterday.
If the focal phenomenon I am asking students to explore can be effectively answered by ChatGPT, then the phenomenon is not worthy of my students. Gogo better and more complex phenomena.

A nice perspective is expressed here: https://thesiswhisperer.com/2020/05/13/stop-letting-the-ghosts-of-old-academia-haunt-you/ (I translated into spanish).
PhD programms should increase the amount of transferible skills. Not just teaching how to be an academic.
If they do so, the overall contributions of PhD programms to society would increase exponentially
@ZingerLearns @ProfDCotton @edutooters Yes, I get teacher fatigue with the flavor of the month PD. I think we need more than bandaids to keep going with the present system.

France isn't as good, but 3 years after defence 93% #PhD are in employment, with 66% on a stable job. Median wages are not huge, €2150 (sociology) to 2700 (maths) depending on the field, but 95% are on mid/upper executive jobs. 47% are in academia, 19% in private-sector research-related jobs, 15% are in public sector outside academia (used to be mostly school teaching, but a growing number of experts I believe - no figures on this).
@ZingerLearns @ProfDCotton @edutooters Yes! It should be about putting learning at the center. And by learning, I don't mean the ability to memorize things, though there's a place for that of course (like multiplication tables). Isn't part of the problem the prevalence of standardized testing, which skews towards measuring memorizables?
@jocelyn_etienne @grimmiges @allanmccoy @JorgeStolfi @david_colquhoun @SteveCooke @freyablekman @SerhatTutkal @anne_kreft @academicchatter I was employed as a PhD candidate at a 🇸🇪 uni, and I wouldn't have done it any other way. In 🇸🇪 , PhD candidates are a separate employment category. The employment equals 5 years. If the money runs out, you need to finance it yourself. PhD employment provides stability which shortens the time spent in a PhD program and increases the quality of the research.
