I’m an editor at Gannett. I manage 4 reporters and lead the investigative and data work at the Asbury Park Press in NJ.
This week, I’m on mandatory furlough.
I appreciate the time with my family, but it is a truly horrid time of year to take away a portion of anyone’s salary.
I make $70K a year. I’m grateful for it. But I’m a single dad with two kids. It hurts.
The employees of this company deserve better. At the very least, they deserve to be paid what the company agreed to pay them.
Connecticut is the first state in the nation to make phone calls free for incarcerated folks. We had the chance to make this happen in #Massachusetts. We didn’t do it. With a new legislative session starting soon, we need to make #NoCostCalls a reality in MA. Cost should not prevent children from being able to speak with their incarcerated parents. #KeepFamiliesConnected #mapoli

"Facebook-like" Groups on Friendica (they're called Forums) are also why I'm so stubborn about referring to this social netowrk as the Fediverse.
Why?
Because Mastodon can't do "Facebook-like" Groups.
If you want to use this feature, you have to use a service like Friendica -- which is *drastically* different from Mastodon.
Nevertheless, you can follow these "Facebook-like" Groups on Mastodon -- because Mastodon is part of the Fediverse.
Tech people now get how educators react when billionaires pontificate about how schools should be run. “I’m sorry, but have you taught anyone? Anything? Ever? Because you sound like you don’t actually know what a classroom is or what students are.”
One of the most influential rap songs of all time (Ether) contained a homophobic slur. The rapper (Nas) took a lot of criticism for this decades later. So he now performs the song without the slur, and re-released the track without it.👍🏿
Lizzo released a track with an ableist slur. She took heat for this on Twitter too. She apologized, and re-cut the song without the slur.👍🏿
Conversations about what a person said, are valid.
You don't get "cancelled" for mis-speaking. It's the doubling down.
As a human rights lawyer who has done extensive immigration work, let me make something absolutely clear.
Asylum is legal immigration.
There's no "port of entry" requirement.
There's no "visa" requirement.
There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.
Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.
Period.
Mastodon also offers the option of NOT commenting on a post about mansplaining by mansplaining. But y’all do it and want to make sure there are no affordances to call you out. You want your nice suburbia experience with you gate keeping and maintaining your comfort while pearl clutching on the possibility of people in marginalized groups calling out your bullshit.

Be assed to give Black folks the same access to equitable infrastructure as other folks. We saw the same thing during Hurricane Katrina, Black neighborhoods got hit disproportionately harder than their white counter-parts, it's the same story over and over. If anything comes out of this tragedy, I want people to finally stop gas lighting us about this country treating Black people as disposable and actually fucking do something about it.
My spreadsheet of #COVID19 studies showing longer-term damage to the body has grown to 100 studies. Here's a link and a thread of some of the most interesting. The conclusion is that COVID can attack many parts of the body, remain present in the body, increase risks of serious cardiovascular, brain, lung and immune system disorders, and increase risk of death and disability. Stop taking it so lightly!

Over the past few years, we @mikrobiokosmos@twitter.com offer a 1-d workshop on scientific writing and publishing, mostly for MSc and PhD students. I don't know if people have been paying attention to what's been going on in Buffalo, New York but the city was hit with a terrible storm over the weekend, which resulted in a disproportionate amount of people on the majority Black East Side either becoming stranded in the freezing weather or losing power in their homes for days, resulting in families having to stay in their homes without any heat.
There are three confirmed deaths so far, but I suspect that the death toll is much (cont)
