It has been interesting watching people and the burgeoning Mastodon community grapple with the tension of the great Twitter migration. The spectrum ranging from "how do we replicate Twitter without a tyrant" to "how can we reinvent microblogging" to "what the heck is a toot" is one layer, and the noob to "I have been here for years" is another that have revealed the complexities and alignment/misaligned of values and visions.

Reminder that if you're feeling lonely today, see this hashtag:

➡️ #JoinIn

There are lots of people (myself included) keeping each other company on there, with all kinds of posts from hot chocolate recipes to historical photos to horses covered in tinsel to just general thoughts and chatter.

You can use the hashtag however you want, serious or fun, and anyone using the tag is welcoming of replies and discussion so it's a great way of striking up a conversation.

See you there! ☃️

COVID minimizers and deniers have been wrong every step of the way:

- Mass infection didn't give us herd immunity, it left millions dead/disabled globally

- Masks and stay-at-home orders reduced spread

- Schools were transmission hubs

- Kids have died/gotten long COVID

- Vaccines have saved millions

But being wrong hasn't stopped them from publicly fantasizing about holding public trials/executions of public health officials.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! We wish everyone a happy and relaxing time with friends and family.

We need diverse representation not only so every kid can see themselves as the hero of the story, but so that every kid can understand that *other* kinds of kids are *also* the heroes of the story.

Any American who is glad they don’t “live in China” should
give this one a read. Left to its own devices, the major difference between autocratic techno-dystopia and the capitalist version is simply a matter of who is programming the computer.

@DinoMom

Tracy, when I've been over on twitter in recent weeks asking people to please come here I've gotten brigaded by these ElonBoys who say stuff like "it's a bubble" & "why are you scared of free speech" & "you'll be back!" & "and yet you just posted here, curious!" etc.

They are *terrified* of mastodon, and the open ecosystem generally. Terrified people are really leaving and scared to set foot in here due to a perception that moderation is INTENSE (let's keep them thinking this!)

We talk a lot about how DIVIDED our political system is.

But one thing that Democrats and Republicans both consistently support is massive increases in military spending.

Every budget is a moral choice.

The $1.7 trillion budget just passed by Congress devotes TWO-THIRDS of all funding to the military and law enforcement.

One thing that is striking to me is how little energy anyone -- Republicans, Democrats, anyone -- spends in justifying these massive spending increases for the military.

It's simply not something that is discussed.

@Gaythia

What do we mean when we say "gun extremism"? I think many may disagree on what constitutes extreme in the first place

For the past decade much of our team's R&D effort has gone into infrastructuring social change-making with open education resources promoting equity and justice. Resources are collaboratively designed by researchers, educators & community members to support needed ideational, material & political shifts to #SciEd & #ClimateEd. They get used by ed implementation projects to promote liberatory goals.

#climatebreakdown impacts have been experienced across many historically-exploited #BIPOC communities of the #GlobalSouth for decades but warnings were unheeded in spaces of power globally where #GHG emissions were primarily coming from. Now that #ClimateJustice discourse has entered the fray, such historical sufferings should be compensated better. #LossAndDamage #Reparations #ClimateColoniality

@ZingerLearns @edutooters @ungrading we keep circling the same topics: test scores are low, what are you (teacher) doing to raise the scores.
My kid's grades are low, what are you (teacher) doing to make sure they do well?
My kid is missing X assignments in the grade book, what "extra credit" can you (teacher) offer them to make it up?

Or worse, parents are completely uninvolved (possibly uninterested) in their student's grades and/or test scores.

@ZingerLearns @edutooters @ungrading this article also points to a major assumption in the reporter's findings: that the tests actually correctly assess student knowledge.
