I think you took aim and then narrowly missed it.
The question is not what happened before, but what is there now.
As you rightly said: "neither has the right to continue commiting war crimes simply because the other side commited some".
This means for me that defending against hamas is right, but only against hamas. So they are amongst innocent civilians, using them as shields. There is no excuse for not doing everything possible to stop them with as few civilian casualties as possible, just as they have lost every claim of a right to their actions when they accepted innocent civilian casualties.
