This process began ~53 million years ago, and is ongoing today.
The Himalayan #mountains are the result of this collision, with #earthquakes thrusting them up and erosion tearing them down. Clearly, tectonic uplift is still winning that battle!
Regional compression (from the collision) produces broadly distributed earthquakes north of the plate boundary. But the largest earthquakes occur on the shallow part of the megathrust boundary (the largest active continental megathrust boundary on 🌍).
In 2015, a M7.8 earthquake occurred in Nepal. This video from IRIS (narrated by me) explains this #earthquake, as well as the seismic hazard and risk for #Nepal and #India.

#introduction I study the pottery of the Pacific at ANU (in Canberra Australia). I'm working on database of petrography. As a side project there's a VR gallery of some of the different petrographic types of the Pacific https://virtual-petrography.vercel.app

A significant sequence of #earthquakes occurred this week in the #Tonga-Fiji #subduction zone. First several events at great depths (600+ km) within the subducted slab, then today a very different type of event: a deep compressional outer rise earthquake. I have plotted these four earthquakes on this map in the context of historical #seismicity.
Cowden Hill, Fife, is a small prehistoric homestead comprising two circular huts, within a sub-rectangular enclosure, on the flat summit of a small hill. A little to the south a ditch cuts across the break of slope but only runs across a part of the hillslope. Was it unfinished or designed this way? Was it related to the homestead? Later rig and furrow strip fields can be seen riding over the top of the homestead.
Maybe you haven't heard of Shiveluch on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Far Eastern Russia, but it is one of the most explosive and active volcanoes on the planet. In today's post you can check out some excellent satellite images by Planet that show the results of some recent dome collapses and explosions from this Russian volcano.

I'm, uh, losing my job 😭 This is going to put me in a rough place. If anyone knows of freelance writing or podcast/video editing gigs they can send my way or boost this, I'd appreciate it tons! Here's my website that links to review samples (recently for the I Dream of Indie YouTube channel), voice work, and other things https://ryanjameshorner.carrd.co/

Hi fellow #Mastodonians (or is it #Tooters - I’m not sure what our collective noun is here). I try to do short weekly #earthquake #scicomm videos. This week’s deep #Fiji events were a good excuse to talk about #subduction
