That’s more or less exactly what a large language model like this does.

It is trained to produce text it seems like it was written by a competent person. In this case #galactica also uses a technical vocabulary, frequent citation, structured argumentation, numbers, etc. to create a veneer of legitimacy—all tools frequently employed in the sort of new-school bullshit that we treat in our book.

it doesn’t care about facts. It has no representation of them beyond their semantic relations.

Last night I watched the Artemis Orion liftoff. Once again I felt the thrill I had so many years ago in the very early days of space (1960s)

Imagine you’re packing for a 12 day long international trip that includes a dress up event, a conference, a field excursion, sight seeing, beach going, cycling (both bike and motor) and jungle tromping. The temperatures will vary between 45 - 80+ F. You get one suitcase and a carry-on (weight limited) and your carry-on must include a computer.

What do you pack?

My life has become a math problem. 😳

Hello there! I’m James, an exploration #geologist and researcher based between Ireland and Greenland. Professionally very much at home in a geochemical dataset, on the side of a mountain collecting samples, compiling a model or bouncing around exploration ideas. Very much in the early stages of figuring this site out. Pleased to meet you all. #firstpost

To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the #Fediverse. On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous.

How deep does the melting that produces massive continental flood basalts occur? A new study indicates that the normal proxy for melting depth (which indicates shallow melting) breaks down at the high melt volumes and fractions flood basalts need. eurekalert.org/news-releases/9

It's really sad that the legitimately fascinating realities of ancient societies and the people who lived in them will always be overshadowed by someone pushing crock-of-shit ideas that actual specialists have evaluated and rejected for really good reasons. twitter.com/TassieTigerrr/stat

Here’s my favourite photo of the Australian night sky. The #Australian #indigenous peoples identified the “constellation” of “The Emu” - an outline formed not of stars but from the dark clouds of dust that obscure the Milky Way. You can clearly see the image of the emu in this one, with the head at the top right. This was taken in 2020 from Ebor Falls in New England, NSW #nightscapes #photography #astronomy

#BronzeAge ruins of #Mycenae looking down from the palace complex to the cluster of homes and workshops below. It’s easy to imagine a thriving city

We don’t know much about Mycenaean #astronomy but there are indications that the #Pleiades were important for seafaring and they adopted the #Mesopotamian important agricultural constellations of #Aquarius for the rainy season and Field/Furrow (#Virgo ) for sowing & reaping

Earthquakes in India and nearby countries are very common, and are the result of India slamming in to Eurasia. (This is also what is creating the Himalayan Mountains.)
