Hi! This is my #introduction. I'm a geologist turned software developer living in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

I used to tweet and blog about volcanoes 🌋, Iceland 🇮🇸, geospatial data 🗺️, and open source science software (http://all-geo.org/volcan01010/every-post-ever/) but I don't have so much time for that these days.

I'm hopeful that Mastodon will be like the glory days of sci-comm Twitter circa 2012.

Big rumblings in the expansion of the #Fediverse have been happening recently.

#Tumblr has already promised to implement #ActivityPub (the protocol Mastodon uses), which will mean you can follow Tumblr accounts from here and vice versa. And today we a learning that #Flickr is also considering it!

This will be a massive expansion bringing, which obviously carries some uncertainties, but I, for one, welcome our new federation partners.

This is the way the internet is supposed to work.

I sat by an election denier on the airplane and he started poking me in the arm to be emphatic about his views on people stealing ballots secretly and the airplane was full and I couldn’t move anywhere so I started explaining the yellow fever in very great detail, all the way down to telling him about the bloody vomit that looks like coffee grounds and it worked. He stopped talking to me. The moral of this story is you can’t out-weird an academic; our toolset is too vast. #vastearlyamerica

⚖️ Some personal news: after having witnessed pushbacks, drownings, mass graves, and all the terrible things that I have reported on since last year, at sea, from the sky and on land, after having studied at odd times, half-awake and half-confused, in bunkers of Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, and seeing 1st hand the constant breach of international law by Russia in Bucha, Hostomel, Izyum, & wondering what was even the point of law, I did get my postgraduate degree in International Humanitarian Law 🎓🤗

Phew - @allochthonous and @annejefferson are on here already and have made a Google Form with a list of Earth Scientists on Mastodon. It's nice to see familiar faces. Chris persuaded me to blog and join Twitter in the first place.
