One of my favorite winter photos, from 12 December 2012 near Fairbanks, #Alaska as I like the way the snowflakes stand out. About 15 inches (38cm) of #snow from this 48-hour storm, but the cabin looking cozy and warm. BTW, not the middle of the night: this was taken just after 9am AKST while I was shoveling. #akwx @capture907

Friendly #Mastodon Tip of the Day 6
Using hashtags on #Mastodon is crucial to getting your message out to the public.
You must view hashtags in 2 ways:
1. Hashtags that always (or temporarily) trend. Example: #Twitter and #TwitterMigration.
These hashtags trend due to the current market movement. 5 years from now… they won’t.
2. Social hashtags, like #caturday.
These are hashtags with 500 posts. You can interact 1-0-1 with all these people.

#archaeology #landscape #visualization from #lidar - sixth in a series, and my third post on #ChacoanBeltRoads. This is the Far View group in #MesaVerdeNationalPark in #Colorado. It has a clear belt road as well as a linear road leading south to the Spruce Tree House ruin, or which the very northern portion is visible here.

Further to the east, extension and strike-slip faulting are causing Baja California to separate away from mainland #Mexico, opening the Gulf of California.

M 6.2 #earthquake 29 km SW of Las Brisas, #Mexico
#Baja California (part of Mexico), is moving NW at ~50 mm/year riding on the Pacific Plate.
This region is part of the Pacific / North American plate boundary where the plates are sliding past each other, causing right lateral strike-slip faulting.
First visit to the #Buttermilk #erratics (great band name, by the way)!
May have lost a few fillings during the drive.
Another important tool in geology is the principle of cross cutting relationships and states that a geologic feature that cuts another geologic feature is the younger of the two. It is good for figuring out the relative age of one rock compared to another. Here we have three types of rock. Using cross cutting relationships, which is the oldest and which is the youngest?
