Saturn's moon Titan is one of my favorite examples of how you can pick and choose narrow bands of visible light in different ways to see things out eyes generally don't. The Cassini camera team made use of methane absorption (far-red, near-infrared) narrowband filters to peer through the thick opaque hazes of Titan. Combine the filters in the right way and you can learn a lot more than what your eyes can tell you.

This #Thanksgiving, thankful for all the folks who keep #Ukraine running against impossible odds.
To the train workers; the utility engineers; the lorry drivers keeping stores open. To logistics folks and the 1000s behind the scenes that make it possible to repair.
For the medical workers. The ambulance drivers. Surgeons. Nurses. The people digging through rubble to save those below.
For those who make homes safe; those who find the lost, and who help their families find peace.
Thank you.
M73/NGC6994, Multiple Star, is an asterism formed by 4 stars in the const. Aquarius. It is about 2511LY distant. Processed in #PixInsight. 💫✨#MyStellina @Vaonis_fr #vaoniscommunity #stargazing #astrophotography #Universe #astronomy #deepsky #night #nightscap #M73🔭💫
Asterism is composed of physically unconnected stars that appear close together in the sky.
Jezero Crater on Mars was selected for the Perseverance Rover to explore because of evidence it was once a lake. But results so far show it is floored by volcanic rocks that have only been transiently exposed to water.

Because of poor air circulation, at this time of year it is common to observe a layer of aerosols engulfing the skies over China
The 🌫️ layer in the Shaanxi Province is visible in the #Sentinel2 🇪🇺🛰️ image of 19 November
Thanks to @kosmi64833127 for the idea!

What happens when the road crosses the creeping strike-slip fault segment? @Geotripper can tell us - he has just updated his amazing 20 year time series from a spot where US 25 crosses the #SanAndreas. Most fascinating observation is how variable the creep rate seems to be over time. https://geotripper.blogspot.com/2022/11/why-did-road-cross-san-andreas-fault-20.html

We are working at depth in the bottom of Cathedral Cave (Wellington Caves). The walls need to be shored up as dig deeper to protect against collapse. This photo is the excavation pit at around 3m deep - we are at 5m now and counting. #palaeontology #palaeoecology #caves #WellingtonCaves
Are those of you here in the #Fediverse aware of the amazing resource that is https://mynoise.net?
No?
Let me introduce you.
It has a medieval village #background #noise environment with toggles you can use to increase or decrease the blacksmith shop and market and horse clops (among many others).
Oh, you want a coffee shop? Sure thing.
Rain? Thunderstorm? Gotcha.
Generic white noise?
RPG thrills? Of course.
Tame that #tinnitus? Yes!
Check it out!
@jbrussell @CopernicusEU This is #Etna #volcano, whose eastern flank is slowly moving towards the east as a result of gravitational forces and upwelling of #magma from under the volcano. Magma injection also occur regularly at the volcano summit, feeding #lava flows and #eruptions, further increasing deformation. This is easily visible with #InSAR. See De Novelis et al 2019 paper, which focuses on the Dec 2018 #eruption: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?cluster=8685606862432434928&hl=fr&as_sdt=2005&sciodt=0,5#d=gs_qabs&t=1668609673277&u=%23p%3DUHTlOdd2JJMJ
Hi everyone 👋 I'm Rudolf, I'm an illustrator and paleoartist. Sauropods good.
The largest earthquake I’ve felt was the 2016 M7.8 Kaikōura NZ. I was in Wellington and although the rupture started >200 km away, it travelled northwards towards us. The earthquake really kicked in at the top of the South Island with shaking of MMI IX (Violent), finally stopping in Cook Strait ~50 km away. More than 20 faults ruptured; the Papatea Fault displaced the coast by ~1.5 m👇 The fact that earthquakes can produce changes to our landscape in seconds is, to me, awe-inspiring and humbling.
Fire burn areas
Fire burn areas will be monitored by California during rain for debris flow
NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day(APOD) is Lynds Dark Nebula. They don't just publish NASA's pic, but those of others as well. The pictures I've seen here are very competitive. Perhaps y'all might look into submitting to them 😀
Here’s Burney Falls in Northern California for #WaterfallWednesday and I’m thankful to all of you who are posting your nice photos & videos today!
