10 years ago, I admit I used to think that insects are not conscious. Surely consciousness emerges from a complex enough system, and the insect nervous system cannot handle that capacity, right? Surely, it's just reflexes!
But.. after spending years of carefully watching flies behave and reading much more about insect behavior more generally, I think they're likely conscious now.
