"cis is a slur" is some next level, roided-up ultra-erasure.

It's also very Newspeak. Double plus Newspeak. Delete the language that describes the concept to delete the concept.

It's funny, but it's also very very bad. Pure eliminationism.

Well, for me at least this has bumped cis up a few levels in terms of how likely I am to use it.

This never happened with "straight" but straight comes with connotations-- that let straight people feel like they picked it for themselves. (but I think it came from NYC ball slang? Maybe?)

"cisgender" is very bold in coming from queer theory lit. Name your oppressors! But also it goes out of the way to be neutral, literal, descriptive. Why not?

@futurebird

Elon is an autocratic a-hole but
Cis sounds like cyst, its just one of those words that sounds bad, no matter what, like the word smegma, carbunkle, or pustule, sounds bad. Its too clinical sounding. Honestly i hated the term from the first moment i heard it, and im not even straight. Straight people should get to make up their own name for themselves if they care about that sort of identity. I think a better word, easier on the ear could be found.

@Coho

Last I'll add, I can understand not feeling thrilled with a new word. I was initially annoyed by the word cis-- but it was really because at the ripe old age of 20-something someone had to explain it to me and it made me feel out of the loop and ignorant.

So, maybe that's what's chaffing you?

I realized, though, it wasn't exactly entirely my fault. It's not like they even explained what "trans" meant in health class (which would have been very helpful, I resented being left ignorant)

@futurebird I'm cis. I don't have an issue with the word cis. However, I'm mildly discomforted about the word trans in that it implies that someone is changing or transitioned their gender. Because as far as I can tell from here, a better way to think about what's happening is that a 'trans' person isn't changing anything about their gender, they're just no longer pretending they are of their assigned-at-birth gender.

@BenAveling @futurebird Perhaps I have a b etter way to think about it that may make you feel more comfortable with it. Long before the prefiix "cis" was used RE gender, it was used in Astrnomy. A cis-lunar orbit is an orbit which is within the orbit of the Moon, and a trans-lunar orbit is one which is outside of the orbit of the Moon. The trans-lunar orbit didn't change from one orbit to another. In this case the prefixes mean "within" and "beyond"

@ambulocetus @futurebird "Within gender" and "Beyond gender". I don't see how that helps.

@BenAveling @futurebird I can offer no more help than that. Perhaps if you ponder it for a while you will see what I mean.

@ambulocetus cis and trans golgi; meaning respectively toward and away from the golgi complex
