Wow. I was on #Metafilter when Jessamyn was a mod and I remember when she was let go because of funding issues. But she owns Metafilter now, wild!

@birdpoof Is Metafilter getting a bump in users from the like Mastodon has?

@ambulocetus

I don't know. Metafilter isn't anything like Twitter, but I could see some Reddit people checking it out. 🤔

@birdpoof It is closer to Reddit I guess. I was never on either one very much. I just never "got" Twitter. I always liked the relative civility of Metafilter. Everything Reddit claimed to be good at, MeFi was actually good at.

@ambulocetus

Metafilter seems to have an older, more mature crowd, that's for sure. I think the main difference is that Reddit has a bunch of sub-communities, whereas Metafilter is one central thing with offshoots like Talk and Ask (I was primarily active on Ask).

#Metafilter also requires $5 to open a new account, which, I imagine, GREATLY reduces trolls and bots and the like.

@birdpoof You are exact;y right. Even the most dedicated troll won't pay $5. I always thought it was such an amazingly simple solution.

I've always been a lurker of #Metafilter, like forever. Never paid the fee to post or comment, but loved to use it to discover new things on the Internet. It's been around since the time of Stumble Upon at least. Never knew any of its true history. Love that the interface has always been clean and simple. I still go to it when wanting to kill time and to find a thoughtful aggregate of eclectic websites.

@MyWoolyMastadon @birdpoof It's only 5 bucks and they won't try any funny business like some sites do. Even if you don't want to comment, consider a donation.

@ambulocetus @birdpoof
After lurking for decades I joined metafilter.com and submitted my $5. Time to pay back.

Now off to find the page for my #Mastodon instance and support it too.

Wonder if they'll take payment in the form of poorly scribbled smiley faces. 😀

@MyWoolyMastadon @ambulocetus

I remember the current interface is the "modern" update--when they were rolling it out, a lot of people didn't like it because CHANGE! I preferred the old, more compact UI too, but they were smart to update for responsive web design.

@birdpoof @ambulocetus
I'm glad they at least kept it simple when they changed and kept the blue background.
