@alexwild @futurebird i found holloween ants again! been many years.

Formica exsecta, big ft high mound with sparse grass flowering out of it. wonder if they keep stuff from growing further around the nest too.

will post pics tomorrow if i get a chance.

I've seen their mounds in Ithaca NY, up on the shawangunk ridge, NY, and now here's one along a river in troy NY. i don't remember ever seeing them in MA.

@barrygoldman1 @alexwild @futurebird We have a lot of Formica exsectoides here near Chicago. Mostly they pop up in lawns. Ours are mostly black and some people confuse them for Camponotus.
