@skells Well I'm certainly not saying we should throw caution to the wind. Nor do I believe that social, economic, and political conditions have changed so drastically since the 50s that this question is no longer relevant. "History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce."

My point was more that I don't want to take a hard line either way. Rights-based ethical frameworks have a tendency toward being used in such a way. Either you have a right or you don't, no middle. This is useful when we want freedom _from_ something like self incrimination. Less so when we want to promote something, such as public health. I'm way out of scope now haha but I don't think your right to control your body is mutually exclusive with the utilitarian goal of providing for 'the good.'

@skells
Sorry it took me a minute to complete my thought in the reply and I didn't see your response first.

@skells
Personally I put myself somewhere in the middle. Medical intervention is sometimes necessary and private companies are even worse at providing for the common good than governments. We've seen what happens when intervention works out well, like preventing typhoid outbreaks, but also when it goes really, really wrong like eugenics and forced sterilization. We could all stand to be a little more practical and learn from history rather than reject differing opinions out of hand.

Anyway, after much rambling... My answer is no. The COVID-19 vaccine should not be legally required for anyone.

@skells
I think your question is beyond the scope of vaccinations alone but in actuality (not theory), yes, governments can and do mandate medical intervention.

Whether or not they should is also beyond the scope of vaccinations. It requires us to make assumptions/value judgments about whether people should be allowed to harm themselves (suicide) or others (Mary Mallon, aka "Typhoid Mary").

Used to live across the street from a church and had lots of these strange little interactions. A woman once gave me a pamphlet on Satan which was a pretty funny read but, in general, it was just really uncomfortable.

Look, climate change is a real concern, but saying it'll mean we won't have Florida anymore isn't the best way to sell that we should prevent it.

@realcaseyrollins
Maybe it was premature, I'm still new to mastodon, but I ended up just blocking the whole domain (poa.st). After the first couple days on here the Nazi shit got old real fast.

@zleap I was being facetious 😉 Granted it's hard to tell with just text

@zleap So... It's the opposite of the fediverse with Facebook in control. What could go wrong?

Nazis & KKK

I love that qoto.org does not engage in censorship and let's the user decide. It's part of why I picked this domain. At the same time it's amazing how many swastikas and nooses I don't have to scroll past on the federated tl anymore after blocking just one domain.

@Shamar @rysiek@mastodon.technology @mala A couple points... 1) When you actually read their policy it's not all that shocking. I would agree it's annoying that telemetry is on by default but you can opt out if you like. 2) Literally any communication that isn't end-to-end encrypted can be intercepted by any third party, not just the company that made your email client

@shymess
Lol isn't that how it always goes? I delete posts, comments, and sometimes whole accounts on a schedule. Not because I say awful things and I want to protect my future self, but to avoid the cringe 😅

Fitness plan for programmers:

every time a build or unit test fails, you have to do 10 push-ups.

You'll become either incredibly good at programming or insanely fit. Maybe both with a bit of perseverance 😅

Gait recognition technology (GRT) can analyse the shape of an individual’s body and the unique way in which the body moves and can be used to identify people if their faces are covered.

@DavidBond I'm still figuring things out too but there's also the local and federated timelines. I found this post scrolling local, which is just posts from people on the qoto.org instance.
