I really think we need to move away from @ChemDraw. The last price hike was just so extraordinary that it's forced @UTSWNews to move to limited seat models… How the hell are smaller schools paying for this? It was $12,000 for a single year!

Oh dear. I've just been informed that collecting the names of every person on the planet for my naughty and nice lists is, and I quote, “a significant and wholly irresponsible breach of #GDPR “.
I'm going to hand out about 8 billion consent forms soon. If you could all get them back to me ASAP that would be appreciated.

With "Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker" this weekend, I have now dutifully watched all the #StarWars movies.

Fond memories of the original trilogy, where the storyline still seemed to make a little sense ...

@mjausson @ct_bergstrom I like the spirit of "Kill your darlings". It's hard, but it really works well.

@betschart @ct_bergstrom I've heard that phrased as "Kill your darlings." Some people save their murdered darlings in special files that they go to for inspiration later on. Useful if the text snippet is going on a tangent. Later on you can develop it into a full-fledged feature if it holds up.

Going through your followed accounts list and asking yourself do they spark joy

During storytime with my 2YO there was a bit about attempting a spell but the magic wand not working.

2 YO immediately: Maybe its battery is low?

Yeah, that's how modern magic works little one🤣

This is the proudest moment of my career.

I fact checked Elno in a Birdwatch on his own $44 billion dollar site over his inability to understand GraphQL queries.

Sometimes it's immediately obvious. They've clearly and unequivocally improved the piece.

Other times, I don't see why they've done what they did.

Now there are two possibilities:

1) they are idiots who happened to rise to the top of their profession by pure hapless chance.

2) they know exactly what they are doing, whereas, coming from inside my field and having written the words myself, I'm too enamored of them.

This is why I accept changes from professional editors 99% of the time.

Tonight I'm working on an essay that has been through two rounds of intense editing from the very highest echelon of professional editors.

They keep cutting things I wrote. Like whole sentences. A paragraph, even.

Like WTF?

@ct_bergstrom I remember some professional writer talking about how you have to look at your favorite sentences in particular. Often these have odd phrasing, don't fit into the flow of the whole thing, or really aren't as cool as you think, but you have grown really attached them. I kept an eye on this phenomenon and I do it and my colleagues do it in their writing. When doing edits it's usually the first thing to go and still people try to bring it back ;-)

@sheldonrampton The learning process for me has been to discern when I disagree with their edits because I think they are wrong, versus when I disagree with their edits because they are theirs instead of mine.
