It's my *7* Year anniversary of (nearly) having a breakdown and quitting my job.

Since, I have:
* Gained awards for teaching
* Got a 'Director' job
* Hosted conferences
* Got *invited* to talk
* Done a load of public engagement

While my former employer who said I was garbage has:
* Pissed off a load of people at the height of the pandemic
* Remained on the Union's shit list for reliance on precarious contracts
* Built an overseas campus where it's LGBT+ staff can't legally work

Fuckin' A🎉

The strain on scientific publishing 📄:

The publishing sector has a problem. Scientists are overwhelmed, editors are overworked, special issue invitations are constant, research paper mills, article retractions, journal delistings… JUST WHAT IS GOING ON!?

Myself, @pablo, @Paolo, and @Dan have spent the last few months investigating just that.

Dismayed to notice that in 2003 I published an article containing a sentence with an unmatched left parenthesis so that everything I’ve published in the last twenty years has been part of one extremely long parenthetical remark.

It was one year ago today that David Smith emailed me out of the blue, asking about my work on computing Heesch numbers. A few days later he tipped his hand and showed me a drawing of the hat polykite for the first time. Happy Aperiodic Monotile day to all who celebrate.

Good morning to everyone who hasn't exploded toxic materials over the Gulf of Mexico and on the social media site they bought for $44b.

If you're new here, and considering whether this space could become a social home for you:

Many of us have been here for a few years, since well before Threads, BlueSky, Spoutible, Post, Hive, Pebble, Cohost, Blurble, Blarble and Blorble.

We've made it through waves of user migrations, claims of imminent demise, and tech bros telling us we're doing it all wrong.

Years later, we're still here. Ad-free. Non-profit. Open source. Millions strong.

Stay a while. You might just like it. :)

I have seen all 4 of these lines of best fit in published peer-reviewed papers and oddly the top left is probably the rarest type 📉

If people keep telling you to meditate or “practice mindfulness” and listening to an improbably youthful Gwyneth Paltrow wannabe chat shit for twenty minutes on an overpriced app that makes dubious claims of efficacy doesn’t do it for you, a brisk walk in the park listening to drum’n’bass, hardcore breakbeat, jungle and so on may give you the same purported benefits without the aesthetic awfulness.

For those who aren’t into bleepy bloop music, I’m told fast/aggressive metal works well too.

I don't (ever) post Tumblr screenshots I found on other websites, but this is, the correct shit

Anybody else having trouble with images not being displayed on Mastodon? I wonder if this is is limited to the qoto instance.
I first thought it was Firefox acting up, but the problem is also around on the Tusky app.

Spätzle-time. Of 3 kg flour came 8.3 kg of Spätzle. Around half of that is in the picture. All prepped now for venison season.

Back in the days, obviously, girls seemed an obscure audience for chemistry books 🙄

This is the most balanced statement I have read all week:

"Of course we should also have sympathy for the palestinians, but we should have no sympathy for Hamas. It is crucial to separate these two: The Palestinians are not Hamas, and Hamas is not the Palestinians."

— Jewish Rabi of Denmark Jair Melchior.

Shocking story about mRNA pioneer/Nobel winner Katalin Karikó, whose early advisor at Temple tried to have her deported & derailed her career because she dared to look for a better-paying job.

Later, UPenn demoted her, then forced her out, because her research wasn't bringing in enough funding. #NobelPrize #science [HT Paul Novosad]

What's even the point of getting a PhD in the middle of a pandemic if you're *not* going to make a plague doctor mask and wander around campus wearing it along with your regalia?

Cheers to all of my fellow plague doctors from the class of 2021 or 2020!
