“Last year in the UK 669m physical books were sold, the highest overall level ever recorded.”
This surprised me. Have to admit.

English mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead was born #OTD in 1861. Whitehead wrote three major books on the subject: A Treatise on Universal Algebra (1898), Principia Mathematica (co-written with Bertrand Russell and published in three volumes between 1910 and 1913), and An Introduction to Mathematics (1911). via @wikipedia

Italian astronomer, physicist, and mathematician Galileo Galilei was born #OTD in 1564. During his time in Pisa, he performed a number of motion experiments. Because the theories he developed conflicted with Aristotelian physics, he was forced to leave his position in 1592 and assume the chair of mathematics at the University of Padua, where he began making his first contributions to observational astronomy. via @aip

🇺🇸 🇬🇧 "Left out from history are the attempts of the founders to force Britain to return thousands of escapees from slavery they sheltered. Patriot state leaders tried to coerce the return of all fugitives from slavery evacuated with the British army by blocking payment of debts to England in violation of the Treaty of Paris. Such actions ultimately caused the breakdown of the agreement and exposed the structural inability of the Congress to enforce the terms of a duly ratified treaty over intransigent states."

Italian Astronomer And Mathematician Roger Joseph Boscovich died #OTD in 1787.
Boscovich produced a precursor of atomic theory and made many contributions to astronomy, including the first geometric procedure for determining the equator of a rotating planet from three observations of a surface feature and for computing the orbit of a planet from three observations of its position. In 1753 he also discovered the absence of an atmosphere on the Moon. via @wikipedia
English economist and demographer Thomas Malthus was born #OTD in 1766. In his 1798 book An Essay on the Principle of Population, Malthus observed that an increase in a nation's food production improved the well-being of the population, but the improvement was temporary because it led to population growth, which in turn restored the original per capita production level. via @wikipedia
