"The Tropical Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and southern oceans recorded their highest OHC observed since the 1950s. Associated with the onset of a strong El Niño, the global SST reached its record high in 2023 with an annual mean of ∼0.23°C higher than 2022 and an astounding > 0.3°C above 2022 values for the second half of 2023."

William Herschel discovers Titania and Oberon, two moons of Uranus #OTD in 1787.
Titania and Oberon are named after the queen of the fairies in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Titania´s orbit lies inside Uranus's magnetosphere while Oberon´s orbit lies partially outside Uranus's magnetosphere. For nearly 50 years following their discovery, Titania and Oberon would not be observed by any instrument other than Herschel's. via @wikipedia

"This paper documents the persistence of Southern slave owners in political power after the American Civil War. Using data from Texas, we show that former slave owners made up more than half of all state legislators until the late 1890s."

Swedish biologist & physician Carl Linnaeus died #OTD in 1778. He was the 1st to frame principles for defining natural genera & species of organisms & to create a uniform system for naming them (binomial nomenclature). Species Plantarum contained 1,200 pages & was published in two volumes; it described over 7,300 species.
The average temperature in 2023 was 0.17C higher than in 2016, the prev. record year, marking a very large increase in #climate terms. The primary cause of this increased global #heating was continued record emissions of carbon dioxide, chart @guardian https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/jan/09/2023-record-world-hottest-climate-fossil-fuel?utm_term=659e3f3a0e652f1f40266ff31942dc82&utm_campaign=FirstEdition&utm_source=esp&utm_medium=Email&CMP=firstedition_email

Yesterday, a major new study was released showing massive numbers of micro/nano plastic particles in bottled water. Here's that study:
https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2300582121
Today, bottled water lobbyists released a predictable, biased, response:
1. Stop picking on bottled water, plastic particles could be everywhere;
2. Maybe they're not bad sooo for human health, we don't know.
3. The methods used are new, so who really knows if the results are valid.
4. Keep drinking bottled water.
