English physician and scientist Edward Jenner died #OTD in 1823.
The terms vaccine and vaccination are derived from Variolae vaccinae, the term devised by Jenner to denote cowpox. He used it in 1798 in the title of his Inquiry into the Variolae vaccinae known as the Cow Pox, in which he described the protective effect of cowpox against smallpox. In the West, Jenner is often called "the father of immunology", & his work is said to have saved "more lives than any other man".

Swiss physicist, geologist, and early Alpine explorer Horace Bénédict de Saussure died #OTD in 1799.
He is often called the founder of alpinism and modern meteorology, and considered to be the first person to build a successful solar oven. He is also considered one of the founders of mountaineering. His research took place in the Alps, particularly in the Mont-Blanc massif.
