@AmazingMeagen @bibliolater Of course some might not want to have random people resurfacing after you’ve forgotten who they are. But it works for me.

@cathodion @bibliolater
Ditto.

If they aren't taking up "space" it doesn't matter. I'd rather appreciate their resurfacing if/when it happens.

Newton's "Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica” was published in 1687. It spells out his three Laws of Motion, which explain the relationship between the forces acting on an object and the changes in its motion, as well as his law of universal gravitation.

You can page through Newton's own annotated copy of his Principia here, courtesy of the Cambridge University Library:

@bibliolater I don’t. If someone’s not posting they’re not taking any of my time or attention. If they start posting in the future, then I decide at that point whether I still want to hear what they have to say.

"This book does not attempt to answer this seemingly unsolvable puzzle either but aims to shed light on a simple fact usually overlooked by linguists and laypeople alike: the conceptual pair is not a timeless given but has a history, and a much shorter one than one might assume."

@bibliolater >Wealthy economies should abandon growth of gross domestic product (GDP) as a goal

There's something to be said for this. "GDP Number Go Up" has been a cover for a wide range of sins. The article, unfortunately, then goes into la-la land as they skipped over this loaded statement:
>focus economic activity around securing human needs and well-being

Which "humans"? Where? They try to address the "how" but it's just a stack of decades-old, useless boilerplate that only works (to the extent that it does at all) within the paradigm of "GDP Number Go Up". Disappointing.

Italian astronomer Charles Piazzi Smyth was born #OTD in 1819.

The expedition to Tenerife with his wife in 1856 established the practice of high altitude observation. Their expedition to Egypt (1865), and the publication of ‘Our Inheritance in the Great Pyramid’ was to lead to prizes and controversy. Ultimately Piazzi Smyth’s adherence to his conclusions and arguments over Pyramidology led Piazzi Smyth to resign from the Royal Society in 1874.

English astronomer Jeremiah Horrocks (or Jeremiah Horrox), was born #OTD in 1641.

He was the 1st person to demonstrate that the Moon moved around the Earth in an elliptical orbit; & he was the only person to predict the transit of Venus of 1639. He correctly asserted that Jupiter was accelerating in its orbit while Saturn was slowing & interpreted this as due to mutual gravitational interaction, thereby demonstrating that gravity's actions were not limited to the Earth, Sun, & Moon.

J.R.R. Tolkien English writer and scholar was born #OTD in 1892.

He has been popularly identified as the "father" of modern fantasy literature—or, more precisely, of high fantasy. He was the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. After Tolkien's death, his son Christopher published a series of works based on his father's extensive notes and unpublished manuscripts, including The Silmarillion. via @wikipedia

The quality of any area ont he face of the planet can be measured by the density of books in that area, not just stores but the books themselves. This works both for cities and individual homes :)
