Serbian inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, & futurist Nikola Tesla died #OTD in 1943. He discovered & patented the rotating magnetic field, the basis of most alternating-current machinery. He also developed the 3-phase system of electric power transmission. In 1891 he invented the Tesla coil, an induction coil widely used in radio technology. He conducted a range of experiments with mechanical oscillators/generators, electrical discharge tubes, & early X-ray imaging.
@bibliolater Sometimes when that has happened to me I’ve just cancelled the request and tried again, usually it goes right through. (If it is an open account, your account is not silenced on the instance and so on).
@bibliolater @jared we know a fair bit, although the engravers and etchers were craftspeople who generally did rather than write about doing. And many techniques are still in use.
This image looks really precise, and by 1800 that was common, but also remember that the work was originally quite large.
@bibliolater There's nothing *to* do. These accounts don't owe anyone a prompt decision ont their follow requests, or any decision at all, even though they stand to lose potential followers doing it.
#OTD 6 January 1781 In the Battle of Jersey, the British defeat the last attempt by France to invade Jersey in the Channel Islands.
I have tried following a number of #Mastodon accounts only to be told that my request is awaiting approval. Some of these accounts have been like that for a number of weeks, to the best of my knowledge the accounts are not private. What would you advise doing in such a situation?

"The data suggest that the Canaanites descended from a mixture of earlier local Neolithic populations and populations related to Chalcolithic Iran and/or the Bronze Age Caucasus. The researchers documented a significant increase in the proportion of Iranian/Caucasus-related ancestry over time, which is supported by three individuals who are descendants of recent arrivals from the Caucasus." https://phys.org/news/2020-05-canaanites-insight-ancient-genomes.html #Ancient #DNA #aDNA #Population #Genetics #Archaeology #Archaeodons #Ancestry #Science #Neolithic #BronzeAge #Canaan #Canaanites @science @archaeodons
"The first such migration is predicted to have occurred at the onset of the Neolithic, and accordingly J1e parallels the establishment of rain-fed agriculture and semi-nomadic herders throughout the Fertile Crescent. Subsequently, J1e lineages might have been involved in episodes of the expansion of pastoralists into arid habitats coinciding with the spread of Arabic and other Semitic-speaking populations."

German astronomer Martin Brendel took the first known photograph of an aurora #OTD in 1892, at Alta fjord in northern Norway.
French mathematician Camille Jordan was born #OTD in 1838. He is known both for his foundational work in group theory and for his influential Cours d'analyse.
Jordan's work did much to bring Évariste Galois theory into the mainstream. He also investigated the Mathieu groups, the first examples of sporadic groups. His Traité des substitutions, on permutation groups, was published in 1870; this treatise won for Jordan the 1870 prix Poncelet. via @wikipedia
Several years on, this simplified advice still rings true:
"What It Takes to Think Deeply About Complex Problems"
by Tony Schwartz
1. Forever challenge your convictions.
2. Do the most challenging task first every day.
3. Pay close attention to how you are feeling.

In my own personal journey to tackle complex problems, learning to structure data and its flow through a software program, and in particular debugging, have more than taught me: it changed how I think and look at the world.

"The essay shows that while the majority of research projects at SIRB concerned medical genetics in the years 1936−1960, racial science never disappeared. SIRB scientists engaged in theoretical debates on the concept of race and conducted racial surveys of the Swedish population, using anthropometry and later serology as research methods."
