so, we switch to battery electric vehicles, charged via already fragile power grids, powered by renewables known for their constant stable output. and the cars get remote kill switches too.

doesn't sound like a bad idea at all! at least if you want means to prevent rapid movement of your "citizens" :)

Tinfoil hat aside, @bonifartius, I live in a place where vehicles are only facilitation, not precondition for transportation, i.e. walking is tiring but it doesn’t kill people. I can’t imagine if one has to fully rely on the electric grid if e.g. temperature can regularly drop below -20, especially outside of urban area. And in 1st world who needs a car in urban area anyway.

IMHO electric cars are a huge waste of resources, especially for the batteries which are ironically not (even close to fully) recyclable. If they can cut down personal vehicles in urban area they can solve both environmental and traffic issues, but I’ll put the hat back on and say the multi-trillion-dollar car industry are bribing^Wlobbying hard against that.

EVs are like paper straws, they are still as profitable while maintaining a better image, but end up in the landfill anyway. Well at least the straws don’t have backdoor and planned obsolescence builtin.

@cnx here in germany one can rather easily go shopping by bike, even in most rural areas. the problem is that society has put up so many expectations and is so hyperindividualized that it often just isn't practical. people often work someplace not in bike range, if you have kids stuff gets even harder. it really takes up much energy to swim against this stream, and many don't have it because of the daily grind.
