What cross-os filesystem to use on a removable hard/thumb-drive?

- NTFS: journaled, weird permissions, symlinks don't always work?
- exFAT: not journaled, no permissions, no symlinks
- FAT32: not jornaled 4GB file size limitation, no syminks
- ext4: symlinks work but permission annoyance when moving between machines, not cross-os

Is there really no filesystem that:

- is permissionless
- is journaled
- supports symlinks
- no weird size restrictions
- works cross-os

@nobodyinperson en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_ some are cross os.
tbh i consider usb keys etc. as volatile storage and copy stuff off them asap.

@bonifartius Sure, but still you need to get the ”copying stuff to and off them” done. This doesn't work if:

- journal-less filesystem breaks due to improper unplugging (FAT32, exFAT)
- annoying permission issues prevent you from writing onto your own drive (ext4)
- the file system doesn't support some file structures like large files, long filenames, special characters, symlinks, etc. (everything except ext4)

Feird that there doesn't seem to be a ”mobile” just-copy-and-go filesystem...

@nobodyinperson @bonifartius I vaguely recall that FAT-based drivers can be configured with caching off. You give up performance & maybe your flash gets more reads & writes than necessary, but mounted unplugging is safer.
