I need to buy myself my own printer too :poutyAkko: , putting a budget 150 bucks for a simple black&white toner one.
for sure doable. I bought my brother for about $40. The HL-L2310D retails for about $100 or so and you don't need duplex
@fluffy
>40 bucks
Lowest I find is 110bucks, new tho. the HL-1212W. But I'll need to check the showcase product and do a test with trisquel at topoffice to see if it work natively.

@mangeurdenuage @fluffy you can get pretty nice refurbished hp laser printers for <150€. those are also old enough to not use drm toner shit. might need hp printer blobs though.

you can buy a brand new brother laser for 110 on amazon, no reason to go refurbished. it's a fine printer and i've printed entire books on them before

@fluffy @mangeurdenuage well, i have my hp for a few years now. back then the cheapest new was around double the price for just a printer and not printer/scanner combo. i did specifically buy an old hp networked laser printer to have minimal fuckups and it has done fine so far :)

just looked it up, the hplip stuff i meant is licensed "GPLv2 MIT BSD", so it isn't a blob and might be in trisquel

@bonifartius >the hplip stuff i meant is licensed "GPLv2 MIT BSD", so it isn't a blob and might be in trisquel
It'll be in trisquel, but no-one actually seems to check the licenses.

I inspected each file in the hplip driver and I found a lot of files that are GPLv2-or-later, two that are GPLv2-only, a bunch under expat and BSD-3-clause and also a bunch of files that are unlicensed or are under a proprietary license, plus a few binary blobs in .so form with no corresponding source I can see.

I need to get my analysis finished and ask HP as to what they were thinking.

HP seems to also ship a bunch of proprietary plugins for hplip and I smell GPLv2 violations already, but I haven't completed my analysis into that though.

@Suiseiseki i just looked it up at wikipedia and did a quick search if hplip is a thing on trisquel. i might have missed stuff :)
