Copyright laws almost always end up benefiting corporations instead of small time artists

@kino @dushman @kino the *current situation* has a bunch of bad stuff that doesn't appear to be beneficial to small timers. that doesn't mean the basic premise isn't useful though
without copyright how would your typical author ever convince a publisher to pay them for their writing? patronage systems only seem to work out for a few people

chinese clones of cheap electronics might be a decent example here. why invest in R&D when you can dump the firmware from an existing micro, duplicate the board, and sell something that someone else invested the time and money to design
the same thing applies to books. you use an expensive on-demand printer but your competitor is a major publishing house. they rip off your work, it costs them less to have it printed, and they undercut you
right now this sort of behavior is the exception because it's blatantly illegal. if you abolish copyright it becomes the norm. I'm not saying there aren't serious issues with copyright as the law currently stands, just that the underlying concept serves a useful purpose. if you got rid of it entirely the corporate abuse would become worse instead of better

well, they do already rip off the work of others. chinese do it all the time, but i guess the companies here do it also and just pay the occasional fine ;)
some copyright makes kind of sense though, it's quite the interesting problem though. information can be duplicated freely without "the original" disappearing. on the other hand you "mixed in your work" and used your own body to create something, so you clearly have the "rights" to it.
