anyone got good ideas for a energy saving NAS? i've been toying with the idea of using a rockpro64 with the nas enclosure, but it's a rather big expense as it only fits two disks.

@bonifartius Going with SSDs on m.2 cards? They are small and shouldn't use too much power.

@niclas that's still pretty expensive for my lean budget ;) i currently have a 800mhz dual core with 5 refurbished 1T hdds rigged onto it :P

@bonifartius
Alright; When I have that kind of dilemma (and "need it"), I amortize the cost over it's reasonable life span.

I bought a $2000 Macbook that I couldn't afford. "Well, it will last 5 years, so it is only ~$1/day". (Lasted 9 years).
I bought a $8000 (with shipping and oven) pick-n-place machine, and "it will last 10 more years, so only $2/day"

indeed, many things are amortizong themselves well.

8T spinning rust are at ~250€, ssds are roughly the double of that.

more problematic is finding a SoC kind of thing with more than two ports for storage and a matching enclosure.. rockpro with enclosure comes close, something with itx or atx hole compatibility would be nice for the enclosure part.

guess the old one has to last a bit longer :blobcatshrug:
