> here come the entitled users saying how dare you tell me to switch to Wayland.

I just want my shit to keep working, man.

@Moon what exactly is the advantage of wayland?

security? all the programs are running on the same system now anyway as network transparency is _clearly_ something one doesn't need!

and that's about it. everything else works fine on X.

@MischievousuTomatosu @bonifartius @Moon the software for wayland (window managers, terminals, etc) are much higher quality and less buggy than X11, that's my reason. I think if you're going for minimalism and simple software you should go for Wayland, it's just better
@bonifartius the security is in fact substantially better than X, on X every window can steal information and clipboard from every other application on your desktop. on wayland every application window is isolated.

one of the purported advantages of wayland is that its blitting and compositor is better so you get less screen tearing and choppiness but in practice it's not always better. nvidia doesn't support it correctly and refuse to so that's a huge problem.
@Moon @bonifartius >nvidia doesn't support it correctly and refuse to

Isn't that their modus operandi for anything not Windows
@coldacid @bonifartius @Moon it's their modus operandi for anything which diverges too far from the common driver stack they maintain across all platforms, which is why they push things like eglstreams so heavily even when literally nobody else is interested in using them. on the flip side, this means systems like freebsd and solaris are fully supported with binary drivers which is not something which could be said for any other vendor.
@coldacid @bonifartius @Moon fuck Nvidia, I should sell my 1070 and buy an RX 580

@coldacid @meso @Moon never had problems with my rx580, had many problems with nvidia shit, even with windows.

@Moon my rationale is that if you have something running which wants to steal your stuff, it's game over anyway.

nvidia is shit anyway. my life got magnitudes better after buying an ati card :)
