why do people shit on D-Bus again? I went over this not long ago, but it's a standardization thing for the GNU/Linux desktop. It's like UNIX but for the desktop, literally. What's so bad about D-Bus?
@neko XML, running daemon, kinda obnoxious to code with in C. it's basically a pub-sub socket or plan 9's plumber but written by CADTs instead.
@icedquinn XML i understand

Why is it a running daemon anyway? To monitor services?
@neko because the kernel didn't offer pubsub sockets at the time.

@icedquinn @neko i have the vague feeling that one could maybe have build something with posix message queues.

freedesktop.org stuff always feels overengineered but haphazardly implemented.

@bonifartius :blobcatbernie: old thread but as i recall the kernel at the time did not offer multiplexed queues. it now does, but nobody is paying to rewrite old code.

@icedquinn oh, sorry for raising the dead :)

i think the posix message queues are quite old, but i only learned of them a few years ago too because winter here in fedi wrote something about them :)
