French authorities are now considering that using encryption (eg encrypting your harddrive, using @signalapp, educating others about privacy-preserving apps) as evidence of conspiracy and terrorism. That's much scarier than "AI" taking over the world.

@cazencott @signalapp

"All members of this group were particularly suspicious, only communicating with each other using encrypted applications, in particular Signal, and encrypting their computers and devices […]."

My university requires me to encrypt my communications and devices. And everybody uses WhatsApp, which is encrypted, just as Signal, including the UK government.

So the above sounds rather silly to be honest.

@MartinEscardo it's utterly ridiculous, but it highlights that many folks in the police and judiciary system (not to mention lawmakers, who are out of the scope of this particular story) are clueless and dangerously so.

@cnx @cazencott @MartinEscardo well, the state is extralegal, they don't have to care and can use and do as they deem fit :)

@bonifartius @cnx @MartinEscardo see, people we like use encryption for *good* reason (protecting confidential information) whereas people we don't like use it for *wrong* reasons (conspiracy and terrorism).
