My biggest issue with catering to people who report (request censorship of) anything they even slightly disagree with, is that once that behavior is rewarded, they will come to expect it elsewhere.

Meaning they will come to expect it from the government, too.

If this doesn't bother you, it should.

@r000t I used to be a massive advocate of freedom of speech. "words only have the meaning you give them", I told myself. Maybe you think similarly.

Then the January 6th Capitol attack happened.

People cannot be trusted with fully uncensored speech. Regardless, freedom of speech is not freedom of consequences.

In your own words: if it doesn't bother you, it should.

And yes, I'm aware that censorship is a slippery slope, and powerful tools in the hands of dictatorial powertripping egotistical assholes is objectively a bad outcome. But if you ask me, fully uncensored, unregulated speech is also extremely harmful.

"people cannot be trusted to breathe air, we have to impose that they use the mandated rebreathers developed by our team of breathing experts."

> Regardless, freedom of speech is not freedom of consequences.

nobody had authority over the people at the capitol, they weren't commanded. that would have been an action. they freely chose to go there and some are facing consequences now. i don't see a problem, this is how things are supposed to work: fuck around and find out. not: say the wrong thing and find out. this line of thought is leading further down the predictive policing path.

"just give me this tiny tool of fascism to fight fascism!"

Fallacy.

> nobody had authority over the people at the capitol, they weren't commanded. that would have been an action.

Trump.

>"just give me this tiny tool of fascism to fight fascism!"

Everything I don't like is woke. Or in your case, fascism.

That's not really how things work. Censorship existed long before fascism, communism, capitalism, and the Internet. Censorship is not something that Mussolini designed.

Unchecked speech causes problems. I understand you don't see things this way, but it doesn't make things any less true. In a society where people are so agitated and polarised, the decisions we collectively make (or not make) can literally end up in Civil War. Think about it.

which one of the official fallacy catalogue?

> Trump.

what? i only can _assume_ you mean something like "trump commanded the people" which only works if he had done it using the thread of force.

only that he didn't, the people decided to do these things out of free will.

> Everything I don't like is woke. Or in your case, fascism.

those two are equal.

> That's not really how things work. Censorship existed long before fascism, communism, capitalism, and the Internet. Censorship is not something that Mussolini designed.

indeed, i should have written "totalitarianism" or something like that.

> Unchecked speech causes problems. I understand you don't see things this way, but it doesn't make things any less true.

so you have found "the truth".

> In a society where people are so agitated and polarised, the decisions we collectively make (or not make) can literally end up in Civil War. Think about it.

people are agitated and polarized because they have shit lives, the societal contract is dismantled while their freedoms are cut ever more and giant corporations which only are so big because of rampant corruption are privatizing profits and leaving the losses for the public. policing speech is literally applying more poison as the cure.

the worst thing about your position is that you degrade your fellow humans to cattle who can't decide for themselves and need a big guy to organize their lives.
