today is the shortest day of the year on the northern half of earth. winter solstice is near.
i like to show gratitude and kindness for all i was given by giving back a bit of nourishment, some fruit and bird food, for the other beings out there on midwinter.
@amszmidt @bonifartius The exact moment of the Winter solstice is the same for everyone, regardless of which time zone you are in.
The time on the clock and calendar might be labeled differently depending on one's location. But the moment itself is simply an instant in time, is the same for everyone everywhere, and depends on nothing except its own definition.
@IceCubeSoup @amszmidt maybe i'll just say longest night? :)
I'm trying to puzzle that out... the longest night belongs to the time zone in which the instant of the solstice happens closest to local midnight... And the year's shortest day would belong to the meridian exactly opposite. (if my thinking is correct.)
The southern hemisphere doesn't count. Because Australia.
@bonifartius Depends entirely on your location -- where I am the shortest day is 22nd December.
