Possibly the most annoying UI trend of the last few years is websites changing from

to

@lain

lol.

@travisfw you will get cancelled because it will not respect deletions in a timely manner as it is offline. also search function is widely known to be evil!

@mangeurdenuage well, most things don't require much power anyway. biggest problem is finding 32bit distributions now, not many left :)

@icedquinn yes they are quite good for being a decade old! i played insurgency sandstorm with it, worked well enough :)
@mangeurdenuage

@mangeurdenuage cool thanks! my most powerful computer is amd fx-8350 from decade ago. i use it mostly for compiling stuff - it has 16 threads so still is pretty good for that, let's see how well it is with encoding :)

i have some old things i want to archive which use ridiculously amounts of space compared to things like av1, and chances that anyone will re-rip them with modern encodings is pretty slim. so i might as well give reencodings a shot, maybe the quality will still be ok and it doesn't take too much time.

technology

XMPP and Matrix both suck, but if I had the resources to fix that, I would probably not invent a third thing, but would try to create a Matrix server and a Matrix client that don't suck.

re: technology

@xarvos @samgai dendrite has seen some good improvements last year, guess you could use it in production now if you were adventurous :)

i'd really love a native client with e2ee which doesn't look like a shitty mobile messenger app but like a 2000s productivity app. kind of like the way gajim looked before gtk went to shit.

@mangeurdenuage you wrote about re-coding some series with av1 and opus a while ago, what software (and settings if it isn't too much trouble) did you use?

COVID actually did something good for me:
It made me realize what an evil world we live in:
The level of govt corruption.
The climate scam.
The World Economic Forum.
The lying MSM ‘news’.
The evil socialism.
So thanks for that.

@djsumdog @keith on the one hand I see in theory the merit of copyright and other IP protections provided that the duration is reasonably short

at the same time I also can't help feeling like fuck it, patronage systems might be inefficient and not support the same overall volume of output but at least they ensure high average quality. having an unencumbered commons and high quality works must have significant cultural value of its own. maybe it's enough to offset any loss in market efficiency
