webshit weekly strikes again: "It turns out that basically none of the original reasons Hackernews started using Signal apply any more, but since they convinced their idiot friends to start using it, they're all stuck with it anyway."

@bonifartius some additional points regarding netsurf : it's really amazing, a modular html&css engine capable of rendering to many different output devices on many platforms. if webshit wasn't so dependant on javascript it would really be quite usable for normal usage.

I still have my spinster account. I was just experimenting one day, because I know so much of the fediverse blocks spinster for being terfy, I wanted to see if there was more of it from here. I didn't realize much of the fediverse also blocks @alex 's gleasanotor for supporting free speech. It is a crazy world where the woke are so afraid of other's opinions that must ban it outright.Quite a few other fediverse instances literally block sites for allowing free speech. They are so hung up on policing and compelling the speech of others, they haven't the slightest misgiving about denying debate, skeptical inquiry and challenges to their ideologies. I am grateful for @alex and @mk for daring to create a platform where debate can happen.

34% of WFH workers say they’d rather quit than return to full-time office work

And if they do need to come back to the office, even part-time, employees said they expect some changes. For example, they’d want their employer to cover their commuting costs, and also provide some form of childcare.

Reminder of why #Signal is far from optimal:

- No #anonymity (every account is connected to a phone number)
- Not #opensource (the git repo of the server hasn't been updated in a year)
- No #decentralization
- No web client, and max. 1 mobile client per account
- No #privacy (your entire contact list is uploaded to the server. It's encrypted, but it's trivial to brute-force encrypted phone numbers. You can prevent it by disabling the PIN feature, but it's enabled by default without warning.)

i'd be interested in at some point, can anyone here recommend something for a complete noob? it would be best if it's with german speakers in mind but i think i could manage with something in english too.

#Signal turning into a crypto-ponzi currency scheme?

Surprise!

That Signal:
- isn't really free/libre software (as Moxie denied freedom to redistribute modified version)
- would *never* federate (political choice of centralization)
- updated server software wasn't published
- invaded people's phonebooks
- runs on Amazon+NSA's infrastructure
- is virtually impossible to use out of Google's infrastructure -
- etc.

...didn't seem to be enough to alarm Signal users.

@TheFuzzStone I cannot get rid of the feeling that there's something fishy around #Signal. Like things don't actually go into the right direction. Privacy is used as a sales argument even though I believe they don't truly care about that. Also privacy is not sufficient. The world does not need monopolies nor their in-transparent white-washing agencies.

soo.. which browser should i use? they all suck in some way:

chome: lol
chromium: not as bad as chrome for privacy but is so dumbed down it hurts
vivaldi: 10/10 features but chome engine and ui is closed source
firefox: tries as hard as possible to be chrome. engine rewrite was really promising, but it's only gotten worse from that point.
brave: another chrome engine browser!!1
dillo: points for trying to be good, but webshit incompatible
netsurf: dito
$qtwebkit browser: outdated chrome engine

Learned from this essay on de-commoditized #protocol/#software, which #dillo browser recommended as MUST read. 🤔

Making sense. But firstly I was quit confused at what **commodity** means in English. Make sense now.

It’s a shame that #UNIX had the nature of commodity but it’s not utilized until the advent of #Linux/userland.

I know almost nothing about programming, languages and these things, but Python syntax is one of the most horrible things I've seen.

Q: How many bureaucrats does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: Two. One to assure everyone that everything possible is being
done while the other screws the bulb into the water faucet.

geert vanden bossche seems to be rather credible. _maybe_ it would be good to at least listen to him and discuss it rather than continuing the hail mary approach.
