I doubt that it is from "proprietary software peddlers", and more towards the "land of envy". There are people that can't stand that other people create great things, with an urge to "take over" or "destroy trying".

They get involved "somewhere", perhaps not competent to contribute something constructive, and instead "loud" and "seek power" within the organization, touting the messages to get more sway, and once higher up, bring in friends with similar traits.
