welp.

From Bruce Schneier:

What do you suppose happens if the next train is too far away to receive the stop signal? If I were Polish I’d be expressing concern about this.

Remotely Stopping Polish Trains

[2023.08.28] Turns out that it’s easy to broadcast radio commands that force Polish trains to stop:

...the saboteurs appear to have sent simple so-called “radio-stop” commands via radio frequency to the trains they targeted. Because the trains use a radio system that lacks encryption or authentication for those commands, Olejnik says, anyone with as little as $30 of off-the-shelf radio equipment can broadcast the command to a Polish train -- sending a series of three acoustic tones at a 150.100 megahertz frequency -- and trigger their emergency stop function.

“It is three tonal messages sent consecutively. Once the radio equipment receives it, the locomotive goes to a halt,” Olejnik says, pointing to a document outlining trains’ different technical standards in the European Union that describes the “radio-stop” command used in the Polish system. In fact, Olejnik says that the ability to send the command has been described in Polish radio and train forums and on YouTube for years. “Everybody could do this. Even teenagers trolling. The frequencies are known. The tones are known. The equipment is cheap.”

Even so, this is being described as a cyberattack.

"The ultimate definition of who is an elite, is who can get who fired. That's the ultimate test, who can get who boycotted, blacklisted, ostracized, prosecuted, jailed. I think that's always the question, who can destroy whose career. And of course you'll notice that is heavily asymmetric, when these fights play out, it's very clear who can get the other side fired, and which side can't." --Marc Andreessen

@tedu

Funny. Reminds me of a "checking wiring" task. The electrician had used those telecom cables with 20 pairs of blue/brown, red/gray, green/purple, ++ wires.

I was at one end and a colleague in the other; "Blue/red??", "I think so", "Gray/yellow", "Yes", "Green/purple", "I think so"..... "Why the fuck are you not sure?", "I am color blind!"...."Why didn't you mentioned it earlier?", "I forgot!".

lolol, mastodon ui eats http: and https: from links in posts, so if you're trying to explain the difference, they look identical.

Medieval Street and Architecture; Dinan, France.

Dinan, a medieval walled town has preserved many 'Medieval Timbered Houses', These half-timbered houses and houses with pointed gables are a reminder of town’s wealthy past. Walls of town, dating from 11th Century CE. Town survived two 14th Century CE, attacks by English.

From 14th-18th Centuries CE, town was busy with weavers and tanners. Town still preserved its fine 18th Century CE, granite buildings, its Gothic bridge.

:angry_cirno:

How often do you use cash to pay for goods and services?

@mischievoustomato @sun_eater @ben I don't understand the obsession with wanting to make everything mainstream. If you left the mainstream, then that means you found the culture to be unbearable. The people make the culture unbearable, not the management or frontend software
