When I first built my site in 2013 or so, it was just a bunch of html pages with Apache serverside includes for navigation and footer links. Then I migrated to one of the fancy static hosts and they didn't support includes anymore so I added a janky preprocessor build step to compile them. Now I'm looking for something a bit more out of the box, but not something with 200 plugins and 4000 npm subdependencies. Any ideas?
My first idea is to just make a webcomponent for the header and footer, but I wouldn't mind more of a template engine so I could keep the content in a separate file and maybe write it in Markdown or something.
So 11ty (eleventy?) seems like it would fit the bill but I am fairly put off by their site. It's total visual and information overload and the marketing is slightly hostile. Not too keen on it.
@tanepiper thought that looked like overkill at first but the docs seem pretty approachable for a quick and basic setup
Astro isn't bad but every time I pick it up I keep ending up in this place where I start thinking "this is cool but what problem is it actually solving for me?" Which is why I keep falling back on 11ty. Kinda like how I pretty much only use Sass for nesting selectors, 11ty gives me back dynamic html includes and that's really all I want.
