A freebie book idea: science mutates a fungus and a bacterium that, when combined, digests plastic into an industrially useful oily substance quickly enough that we now have effective plastic recycling. An industrial accident releases the active agents into the environment.
I heard a similar story about developing microbes to digest oil spills and then they end up getting into everybody's gas tanks.
