@tindall I wanna understand what is it _exactly_ that people think sucks about desktop environments. I wish I could do a survey.
@jalcine I think that's a different question to what @tindall was saying.
Linux desktops suck in general (e.g. "I can't connect to my phone using Bluetooth and download photos") because there is no one doing proper integration with the rest of the stack: https://mastodon.social/@tbernard/101013026181254719
People think Linux desktops suck because they want different things, e.g. "GNOME won't let me use choose a UI font so I can't use a nice font like Comic Sans".
@mjog I'll say. I don't like Linux desktops much either, but for a different reason. I have an issue with some of their speech APIs (legally, and nearly totally blind, in fact, I might as well be totally blind for the amount of print I can read, which is zero.) this causes me to put the whole Linux thing into a different prospective.
@cambridgeport90 Oh, well I am pretty deeply entrenched in the "Linux is the least terrible option" camp - I wouldn't run Windows or OSX even if you paid me to, but I'm pretty boringly normatively-abled, too.
@cambridgeport90 I was under the impression that Linux's accessibility support wasn't too bad though. GTK and GNOME seem to put a lot of effort into it at least.
I can only remember one accessibility bug being submitted against Geary, for example. I have assumed that meant it was in pretty good shape accessibility-wise, I guess maybe that could instead mean no one that needs decent accessibility uses it though?
@mjog all depends on what distribution you're using. I kid you not. I've seen some of them that intentionally strip those features out. I have one currently on one of my laptops.
