The Taylor Swift harassment campaign on X is a warning. These same tools are already being used to harass average people across lots of platforms, and the response from tech companies and lawmakers hasn't been nearly good enough platformer.news/taylor-swift-d

@DaywalkingRedhead

For all its flaws, social media is one of the only forums in America where a rich white billionaire can tell an obvious lie, and get dragged by a poor Black woman for it.

There are practically no other forums in US society where this happens. It's the closest thing to "checks and balances" that exist.

Which is probably why some billionaires hate it so much, and want to either control it or destroy it. 🤷🏿‍♂️

so, i don't agree with blanket prohibitions on writers writing outside their own experience. but writers should approach the challenge of writing someone else's perspective with care.

1. read, watch, listen, etc. to the stories written by the people themselves. & not just academics or those with 'ideologically correct' opinions. get a variety of perspectives.

2. study up on topics like discrimination, but try not to make victimhood the characters' 'single story.' 3/ youtu.be/D9Ihs241zeg?feature=s

I asked and for some cultural analysis of transgressiveness and co-optation. They responded with some words!

Can AIs do interesting cultural analysis? ceoln.wordpress.com/2024/01/25

Bad: Asking small content creators why they deserve a dollar a month.

Good: Supporting small content creators with a dollar a month.

Great: Perfecting the ancient art of origami, and presenting your favorite small content creators with dollar bills folded into beautiful cranes and whimsical frogs.

That's possible... also we live a lot longer I think. I wonder if there is anthropology on the subject.

Tip of the Day!

Here is a reminder to everyone [rightly] pissed at the incredibly high cost of peer-reviewed journal articles behind paywalls:

If you send an email to the lead/corresponding author (whose contact is almost always provided in the article, or easily found with google) and ask for a copy of the article, the author will almost universally be delighted to send a copy [legally] to you, free.

We authors LOVE it when someone asks for a copy of our articles!!!

This Fleur-de-lis-shaped Book of Hours was made in Paris in 1553 AD. It is an illuminated manuscript on paper, written in Latin. The book was originally made for King Henri II and Diane de Poitiers, and sold for 28,000 at Christie's in 2006.

Only one more book of this format is recorded and this is kept in the Bibliotheque Municipale of Amiens, France.
