Looking back on the last decade, it seems clear that Twitter caused some pretty significant shifts in how ML/AI research was driven. Papers could go viral in a way that wasn't really possible at conferences or on arXiv. This incentivized lots of work in areas that could grab your attention in a tweet - anything with cool videos or visuals. The current wave of generative AI probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for social media. Was this a good thing? Will academics moving off Twitter change that?

Because I'm on a new instance and I don't know if my pinned posts will transfer, let me introduce myself again.

Hi. I'm a #screenwriter who wrote a thing you saw (and some stuff you didn't), a creator, a complainer, a resister, a progressive. If you like me over there, please follow me here. Or if you've never heard of me, consider following me. I promise to try to make you laugh at least tickle your brain.

Hear me out...

A "hoarders" like TV show...

But the host interrogates rich people about why they hoard wealth that could be used to eliminate suffering.

I don’t know how mastadon will develop but one of the things I like about it is that it feels like we can contribute something to change course or add to the features/type of community we want. I hope these aren’t famous last words 😂

Another note for new #TwitterMigration folks like me: social norms here are that we don’t censor names like “Musk.” It shouldn’t be necessary, because full-text search isn’t really a thing and trolls are actually moderated.

If content is potentially offensive, put it behind a CW, but don’t “c*nsor” it because this breaks people’s filters (i.e., prevents them from being able to mute words).

Some #midjourney art… wanted to see a universe where love, hate, anger, and sadness blended into a brilliant whole.

I think it came out just right.

meta, help your instance

Admin burnout

Remember: Instances run on money and time. Money can be easily thrown at the admins, but moderation is time and nerve consuming.
Consider helping.

No event, no Service is worth being run with other people and especially volunteers mental health getting thrown under the bus.
We can spread the load. We can help.

And of course help adjunct services. pixelfed and peertube come to mind, but there are many more that we passively use, donate to them.

Do you remember Switter? Should we? It became the 3rd biggest Mastodon instance in the fediverse and a lifesaving refuge for sex workers around the world. It was shut down despite much effort against harmful anti-sex and anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation and policy, which remains a threat over many of us.

If you think you've got the hang of things so far, it's time to blow your mind.

If you're on the web app, go to preferences -> preferences -> appearance, and select "Enable advanced web interface"

It'll split your screen into 4 columns, letting you post, view your home timeline, notifications, and have a customizable column (I keep mine on Local timeline most of the time).

How is abortion an economic issue? Being forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term means:

Families are 4x more likely to live below poverty line
Parents are 3x less likely to work full-time
Parents are 6x more likely to receive public assistance

Remember this when you vote.

And perhaps I should add , although it seems a bit unfriendly for the atmosphere here so far...
