it's hard to make one of these!! I have so many interests and things I want to talk about but I'm looking forward to finding more community on here and having genuine meaningful conversations

@ceoln @dp @timnitGebru @niawag of course it's not like Twitter or other social networks are any better about thinking about these kinds of potential problems. There are good techniques for looking at this in a structured way -- I call the general approach "social threat modeling" -- but virtually nobody does it.
Maybe it’s just me - or #Mastodaoine - but while Twitter has the air of an end of conference networking drinks (“LOL I have a personality also here’s my card”) this feels more like it could be the 10pm pub drinks where dreaming & scheming & mischief & revolution might just happen…
👋 Hi all. I'm moving in here. I'm a librarian committed to open science and scholarship in all its dimensions, studying and stimulating innovations in scholarly communication. Currently spending quite some hours on DIAMAS, a European project on diamond/institutional publishing, see http://diamasproject.eu/.
I already see quite some familiar faces here and am looking forward to meet new people.
LUS HIUSOE UHO TOO #midjourney v4.alpha (sometimes you're doing a thing, and you crank chaos up a bit, and you get a lovely surprise!)
FYI — I collect human generated #weather observations for no reason at all. So if, however improbably, you'd like to share your anonymous weather report with a person from the internet for no reward at all, this is the site you need: https://whitherweather.org/
I can't tell if I am seeing Mastodon veterans speaking of Mastodon as if it was the whole Fediverse, or mostly new arrivals. That troubles me. I think we should encourage awareness of all the many platforms out there, of which mastodon is merely one. Most still don't realize the beauty of #DSN is they can move to a server with features they like best, not just people they prefer. Those I follow are already scattered among dozens of servers, and many of them are not Mastodon.
Expect some of the following to happen in the coming weeks:
- celebrities with huge follower counts pushing tiny community-run servers to their knees
- instance admin burnout; shutting down of servers
- big new servers that don't "vibe" with common rules or culture being widely defederated
- some notable account violating an instance code of conduct and throwing a fit
- lots of people ragequitting Mastodon for one reason or another
- etc.
It'll be a rough ride. Patience and strength, all.
An interesting problem:
I've been hearing from a lot of folks that "I'm trying to sign up for Mastodon and it's not letting me / it's confusing / it's a mess / it's broken"
When I inquire, these folks are always using a mobile app to sign up
My sense is ... many mobile apps are bad *in general*, and their signup is *particularly* broken
I tell these folks to sign up using a plain 'ol browser and it works
I'm now switching my "hey, sign up!" advice to insist on using a browser
#feditips Mastodon doesn't have DMs. Don't tell people that it has, because it is conceptually confusing. DM triggers the idea of a private chat separate from the timelines. Again, Mastodon doesn't have that.
Mastodon has visibility options. If you choose “Mentioned people only”, and add the handle of a person you are complaining about, then they will be able to read your complaint because you are mentioning that person!
So again. No DMs. Just visibility options. This ain't Twitter.
I keep seeing people say Mastodon is nothing like Twitter. And they’re right.
Mastodon is an echo of the old internet, it’s decentralised, chaotic. What you get depends on your sysadmin. You can’t search, everything has to be shared to you by a human. Networks split apart and rejoin. What you see is your unique connection to it.
Is this good? Maybe. But for me that’s the internet I grew up with. No algorithms, no targeted adverts, just human interaction, and it was glorious.
Used to seeing lots of concern trolls on
Someone who posts to an internet forum or newsgroup, claiming to share its goals while deliberately working against those goals, typically, by claiming "concern" about group plans to engage in productive activity, urging members instead to attempt some activity that would damage the group's credibility, or alternatively to give up on group projects entirely.
