I retired from the #USAF reserves in 2021 after an interesting career seeing a lot of the world.

I am publicly 🏳️‍🌈 #NonBinary and #asexual. I prefer they/them pronouns for that reason, but I don’t get upset when people accidentally mess it up. Gender is silly, and I prefer to not participate in gender roles! I never married or had kids for that reason, but people are great and I have lots of awesome pals to have adventures with. 🤷🏻‍♀️🍸

I care deeply about #humanrights and #socialjustice. I am a proud #atheist and #humanist. It’s integral to who I am. I care about people today and future generations being well and safe. I’ll get mad for you, because I care.

Setting up #2FA on Mastodon from your desktop computer: Preferences -> Account -> 2FA, then scan the QR code with a 3rd party authenticator tool on your phone (Microsoft Authenticator, for eg).

cuz there's a lot of confusion about the "silo-ing" thing on Mastodon, hashtags are cross-instance, so if you wanna find or talk about specific interests with likeminded people even outside your own instance, use hashtags

Hey, people (like me) moving to #Mastodon from #Twitter! If you've set up automatic crossposting from Twitter to here, please consider turning it off. I don't think it works well; formatting often looks odd, but also as you can't really engage, because replies don't end up on Twitter. But mainly because I think it's disrespectful to the Mastodon community; almost as if you can't be bothered to engage here. If you've got something to say here, say it *here*. That's my strong suggestion!

I've been watching the twitter flood with my ironic broken-brained detachment and also popcorn but the one thing making my blood pressure spike is all the people who've been here 5 minutes reporting people for posting fully-CW'd nudes/lewds because 'that's not the energy we need here. We don't do that here'. We, in fact, DO do 'that' here and have been doing 'that' here for many years. Take your swerf energy and fuck off to mumsnet

Hi friends. There are some great #Mastodontips that are floating around here. But here are couple of bits I have picked up that's been really helpful to me:

1) Edit function. If you use web interface you are able to edit your posts which is awesome. 🙌🏻

2) CW - I know some folks from Twitter are annoyed about it. But, it's an awesome tool if you think of it as a content wrapper rather than a content warning.

while individual instances might have explicit moderation policies related to CWs, the fedi-wide consensus has always been:

* CW the stuff you think should be CWed
* don't expect strangers to respond well to demands (including about CW topics)
* but actually think about CWs systematically
* and know that if you don't CW certain topics, the people who want those topics CW'd won't follow you (and might even mute or block you)

client-side filters for generating CWs (coming in masto 4, already part of clients like fern for years) resolve the tension between stuff you don't want to CW when posting about & stuff that you want CW'd when it shows up on your TL, and i hope more clients & instances begin to support it

Apparently, listing a bunch of hashtag interests in a post will help people with similar interests find me, so....

I'm writing a Mastodon quick-start guide for BirdSite refugees. Does anyone have a list of well moderated instances, and any suggestions for stuff to add to the guide?

I've now learned I should do an #introduction so:

I'm Alex Saum-Pascual. I am an associate professor at UC Berkeley, where I teach #digitalliterature (or #elit) and #contemporary #Spanish #literature and #Iberianstudies. I am mostly in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Berkeley Center for New Media #bcnm.

I am also a digital #poet, and my work engages #environmental and #feminist questions (surprise, so does my recent scholarship!).

And.... I am also from Spain, so I write in both English, Spanish and, most often, Spanglish.

Now that we are through Election Day & women & young adults had a heavy impact on the results, I have to express my anger with how the media handled our votes. The past few months I’ve been hearing how “the Dobbs decision was no longer an issue”, as though women had just “moved on” from the fact we lost rights to make decisions about our bodies. As if paying $2 more for eggs was more important than our eggs.
