Today I wrote 1212 words for #NaNoWriMo on Book of CoL volume 2!

Tomorrow I plan to write some even if I go out of town. It's gonna be too cold to really do much else and my mind will not let me put this series down.

This lawyer's twitter thread is SO important as new fediverse instances pop up at a prodigious rate: in the US, administrators of an instance can face legal (enormous $) liabilities they might not know about. Thread has clear directions for key steps to take to insure against/avoid various liabilities (e.g. for copyright infringement by users on yr instance). Bad actors will soon figure out - if they haven't already - that setting up impersonations of important organizations now will allow them to set off an explosion of chaos and confusion at a time of their choosing.

So if you run an account for an organization, please set up link verification between your Mastodon account profile and your organization's website.

The fact that we're being seen as a viable alternative to them is an admission that a federated, decentralized future is not only possible, but desirable.

Mastodon is not one thing, or one place. It's a network of many things and many places. We don't have a spokesperson (I mean, there's me. I'm the official spokesperson for 💯 of the fediverse, but beyond me there is no spokesperson) we don't have consensus on moderation or blocking or tools or what is good and what is bad. Some of us are professional SREs and Sysadmins, some of us aren't. Some of our instances have been around for 5+ years, some won't be here in six months.

And that's good! All of it, every last bit of it is good.

We're wrestling power away from the billionaire class, in real time, and reclaiming it for the People.

But if you work in tech or VC, chances are that you wouldn't make it 4 days locked up in pre-trial detention with me, let alone 4 years.

You would be willing to confess to crimes that you didn't do just to get out of that place. DAs know this, and use the threat of prolonged exposure to physical violence, to elicit false confessions.

This is a major part of the US "justice" system. This happens much more frequently than court trials.

@left_adjoint @tomalak Urbit outdoes bitcoin for the degree to which it combines "interesting" in the sense of "what the hell even is this" and "i'm not even mad, that's amazing" with utter unfeasibility and utter uselessness

this is what gives it what little life it has: it's technically technically-interesting but utterly unusable. Not even FP people take it seriously - except fash. So its only function is as an identifier to fellow fash. Which it's serving admirably.

Caroline Ellison from Alameda, the trading desk arm of the collapsed FTX crypto exchange, has an Urbit.

Urbit is the OS founded by Curtis Yarvin, aka the creator of neoreaction Mencius Moldbug.

basically only one kind of person has an Urbit.

I would call Urbit "TempleOS on the blockchain", but that makes it sound too interesting.

anyway, Caroline's Urbit posts are as eyegougingly awful as her Tumblr - where she combined bizarre race and IQ science with detailed writeups of the possible suffering of fish - and I hope someone else will gather them up.

cos unlike her tumblr, which she deleted, urbit is blockchainish enough that deleting stuff is a bit hard. lol.
