There's A LOT of discussion about content moderation right now and very little of it touches on the fact that we've all lived on the big social sites for the last decade-plus thanks to the massively exploitated labor of mostly-invisible moderation workers. The social web at scale wouldn't have happened without these laborers, who in addition to shit wages, have been exposed to literally every imaginable horror.

If we're remaking this world, let's do better on that front.

#introduction

I'm Tim. I'm a geek. I love systems, networks, and software. I started a thing called DynDNS.org a long time ago. I didn't get any of Oracle's money when they bought it. But I work for Google now so I can't complain too much. All opinions are my own.

I love the Boston Red Sox even though they often don't deserve it and MLB is ... terrible in so many ways.

I'm always open to answering questions about the world I llve in and things I've done, DNS, SRE, infosec... just ask!

Fascism

@drvolts Look, liberals say “Black Lives Matter”, and conservatives praise Hitler, so it’s really both sides.

In 1959, police were called to a segregated library when a Black 9-year-old boy trying to check out books refused to leave, after being told the library was not for Black people.

The boy, Ronald McNair, went on to became an astronaut. The library is also now named after him

The Boston Public Library (USA) has digitised its collection of legacy vinyl (crackle and hiss and all) at the Internet Archive, and it's the absolute epitome of a 50s–70s library record collection.

Hi, I am new. I am tooting for the first time. And it certainly does feel like the very first time.
I love that Mastodon is decentralized as social media should be.
Capitalism will always ruin platforms.
As an interesting side note, I am lactose intolerant. Interested yet?
Thanks

After @ChadLoder tweeted about a massive data breach on #Twitter this evening #ElonMusk suspended him on that platform. I took these screenshots just now from the web as I am currently suspended from Twitter for an alleged violation but I'm trying to get the word out. This is a NEW breach. Elon looks like he may be in big dodo! #FTC #DataBreach #ChadLoder #TwitterDataBreach

If you are new to #mastodon, migrating from #twitter and you love to post videos, please consider posting your video over at a hosting site such as Youtube or Vimeo (others exist). Then post the link, it should show and play in your Toot.
It saves your server from having to store and stream huge quantities of extra data.

ranting about hive social

Hive is adding ~500k users daily, passing the 1 million user mark on Monday and then 2 million users earlier today. They're supported only by the 24-year-old founder, two employees, and zero moderators.

It's completely irresponsible for them to have unlimited signups when they can't possibly handle abuse, harassment, scams, spam, disinformation, or illegal content. businessinsider.com/twitter-co

Review: *Writing the Revolution: Wikipedia and the Survival of Facts in the Digital Age,* by Heather Ford

“Ford’s (digital and social media studies, Univ. of Technology Sydney) book offers an eye-opening look at how Wikipedia curates content that is used as factual data by millions of people and organizations worldwide. It takes readers on an ethnographic journey that traces how live events are recorded, reported, edited, and ultimately understood.”

Moved servers again (last time, I hope!!) so #introduction time again!

I create #cozy soothing stories for imaginauts, insomniacs and other grownups.

The #podcast version is softly spoken with a welcoming female voice.

The YouTube #video version also features charming watercolor illustrations: youtube.com/@Inklyrion

And now as well as the (rather obviously suspect) and , there's this , which has a nicer vibe and no obvious plutocrat in charge, but still, one wonders why...

Ach, that was upsettingly Twitter-like! I have disengaged.
