Out of nowhere, my nephew just asked, “Do you think Pavlov thought about feeding his dog every time he heard a bell ring?” and now I’m going to be haunted by this question.

Pine martens - aren’t they just beautiful?
A departure from my mountain photography today. I have spent the last six summers photographing pine martens from my tiny hide in the woods near #Inverness in the #ScottishHighlands.
This animal on the right is only 5 months old, leaning up against her mum and having a look around. A magical moment, and one I am privileged to have seen.

Is there something I'm missing about Trunk [1]? I posted on Cohost that it was an interesting approach to discovery - opt-in by category with no automation, just "here's a list of people who think you might find them interesting based on this topic" - and I got an *extremely* strong negative response.

What gives?

Hey.
Fuck this weaponization of tomboys I'm seeing in media lately.
I am a trans tomboy. A girl, who does girly things, but also likes some boy things and to sometimes present an effeminate take on a masculine outfit or look.
I am still trans. I will continue to be trans no matter what.
Tomboys and femmy boys are not proof that trans people don't exist; they're proof that gender is more complex than "MAN HAV PEENICE GURL HAVE VIRGINIA"

Damn it, cis folk.

Anybody who is angry about the student loan relief blocking lawsuit, and you really should be if you aren’t - this the organization ultimately behind it: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Job_Cr. They put up a puppet defendant to get standing, but they funded the entire thing. They also lobby extensively for keeping healthcare private. Basically this group will support anything that workers too poor to try and improve their lives. Modern day slave masters. #socialist

the tumblr style of literary engagement + dracula daily

(making my own thread because i don't want to hijack a stranger's)

i think tumblr's culture developed a specific, characteristic way of relating to media -- one that's extremely valuable, especially as a counterpoint to the style of criticism taught in high school, which which the mostly-young tumblr userbase is familiar. and i think two recent 'fandoms' illustrate this best: dracula daily & gancharov.

Cricut cutting machines, ubiquitous in schools, libraries and makerspaces, can be used to make embossed or stenciled tactile graphics. A Braille embosser costs at least $1500 — Cricuts cost a fifth of that or less. Today I learned that I can handle the hardware and make great stencils: all that holds a Blind maker back is a set of unlabeled controls in the software. Does anyone know somebody at Cricut I could talk to about making the interface more accessible? Boosters beloved on this one!

High time for an #introduction - hello Fediverse!

#Writer of the #utopian East #Berlin Series ("what if the #BerlinWall didn't fall?") and the frankly depressing Cold Island (how could it not be depressing, it's about people without a British passport and #Brexit).

Despite the above, my most popular books are a #spy #crime series about an anti-hero #Stasi officer.

Why I Quit Elon Musk’s Twitter

People get so perplexed when they find out you don't drink, like they can't fathom that you can have just as much fun at the weekend WITHOUT alcohol, at home alone in your underwear eating Nutella from a jar while being yelled at by middle-aged men named Dave on the internet

“These ministers . . . strip the love of God of its beauty, and leave the throng of religion a huge, horrible, repulsive form. It is a religion for oppressors, tyrants, man-stealers, and thugs. Since I'm relative new here, I thought I should introduce ppl to the work I do. Last year, I published with two colleagues from Colgate University a study of how Twitter discourse changes before an after a moratorium on fracking in the mid 2010's. Specifically, using sentiment analysis on 400k tweets, we looked at whether rhetoric on public figures shifted from a "devil" to "angel" narrative among anti-fracking groups and vice-versa among pro-fracking groups. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/ab
