I've seen people recently criticizing folks for continuing to use Twitter in the wake of recent changes. Naunihal's point here is one that they'd do well to consider.

Mastodon =/= Twitter, because it doesn't want to be Twitter. That's great - more variety is good. But some of the features it lacks are features some communities really value - for them, there isn't yet a viable substitute.

"Who We Are" project paper is complete. It includes US #amateur #radio #demographics, a literature review, and practical advice on how (and why) to improve #diversity and #inclusion.

The paper and other resources can be found at github.com/Abraxas3d/Demograph

Thank you to @OpenResearchIns for supporting this work.

Ending cash bail in Illinois may seem radical but it's actually pretty normal.

Every country on earth except the US and the Philippines has ended cash bail.

Ending cash bail isn't extreme, caging people because their poor is, we've just normalized it.

I keep saying that it's been a cold winter. In fact, it just turned winter (technically). I do enjoy the winter scenery, but it is testing this ex-Californian patience with how cold it has been! #MastoArt #ArtMatters

It’s a complete failure of infosec-meets-user-psychology that “this TLS certificate is issued for your bank and the server is sneaky hackerman dot com” and “this otherwise valid certificate expired a day ago” have the EXACT SAME USER EXPERIENCE.

It's wild how computer programming went from exclusively women's work to "we're not sexist we just don't think women are interested in it" in like 40 years

"Much of the moral panic over “cancel culture” – which animated Musk to buy Twitter in the first place – is a reaction to the fact that traditionally marginalized groups gained technological means to affect the political debate."

I'm genuinely actually quite shocked to see an article in the mainstream news media acknowledging the reality here.

Hi #academia #mastodon, here are five dope papers I loved this year:

1) Lavar Edmonds finds that students who are taught by teachers trained at #HBCUs have better outcomes, especially if they're Black.

2) @annastansbury and Robert Schlutz find that #economics is the least socioeconomically and racially diverse major field in #academia using data from the @NSF.

3) Alex Imas, Aislnn Bohrenn, and @instrumenthull exploring a novel way to isolate systemic #discrimination.

Lore says 'tis the night when Odin mounts Sleipnir, his eight-legged steed, and dashes through the star-studded sky with elves, fairies, valkyries, the ghosts of the dead, the hounds of Hell in tow: the Wild Hunt.

Painting is Peter Nicolai Arbo's "The Wild Hunt".

i often see floating around the fact that Marx traded stocks to promote creepto and to legitimise financial advice. I am reading "Invested: How Three Centuries of Stock Market Advice Reshaped Our Money, Markets, and Minds" (which is excellent) and this is a v good point that promoters often forget to mention:

Fondly recalling the classmate from my Catholic girls' high school who memorized the phrase "never underestimate the elasticity of the anal sphinter" and absolutely glowed any time she figured out a way to drop it in casual conversation.
