@bookstodon #12BooksOfChristmas day7: Once Upon a River, by Diane Setterfield.

This is what storytelling should be: a page-turner, with engaging characters, suspense, a touch of the supernatural, dramatic action, allegorical resolution: everything a reader could want.

The book's genre is often identified as historical fiction, but that's only a partial fit. One must add: magic, myth, and a little gothic mystery, too.

Will it dawn on you
when opportunity's passed
Joy stood before you

Sick of people calling everything in crypto a Ponzi scheme. Some crypto projects are Pump-and-Dump schemes, while others are Pyramid schemes. Others are just middlemen skimming off the top. Others are just standard-issue fraud.

Stop glossing over the diversity in the industry.

As of today you can legally make "The Heffalump of The Baskervilles".

I shall look forward to someone doing so.

>> Happy Fibonacci Day! 1 1 23

and I find this an excellent way to begin.

Also in 1983, Lucasfilm (later Pixar) made the first high-resolution computer-generated image that was supposed to be near-photorealistic and "a single-frame movie".

"The Road to Point Reyes" took a month to render.

Ex-pope Joe Ratzinger died yesterday, so I want to quote his final Christmas address, on trans people, in which he tried to be super transphobic and it backfired:

"The words of the creation account: 'male and female he created them' (Gen 1:27) no longer apply. No, what applies now is this: it was not God who created them male and female– hitherto society did this, now we decide for ourselves… From now on there is only the abstract human being, who chooses for himself what his nature is to be."

An animated gif for #genuary2023.

This animation demonstrations something interesting about the notion of periodicity, I think. The basic period of the GIF is 2 seconds (i.e., the frames repeat every 2 seconds). However, if you follow one of the discs, you will see that it takes much more than 2 seconds to return to its starting point.
