The Love Unlimited Orchestra: MUSIC MAESTRO PLEASE (20th Century, 1975).

Barry White’s beats-and-funk-laden shag carpet of an instrumental masterpiece is the follow-up to his Orchestra’s global smash “Love’s Theme.” This album launched a thousand samples and help set the stage for disco. Deeply evocative.

Politicians in #Tennessee have passed a bill which now heads to the Governor to be signed into law that would criminalize public drag performances.

From one performer in #Tennessee:

"The original Pride was a riot! And, if this year, we need to remind them, that we will fight for our liberation, we will raise our bricks high again and let them know that we will not go quietly!...We are queer people, we are very strong, and we will rise!"

My source here is https://500songs.com/podcast/episode-27-tweedle-dee-by-lavern-baker/ .
In the 1950s there was apparently no copyright protection for arrangements. This made it easy for mediocre white musicians make a note-for-note copy of songs by Black musicians and get more radio play by virtue of being white. LaVerne Baker was a talented R&B singer who at one point made the white singer copying her records her life insurance beneficiary because "if Baker died then Gibbs would no longer have a career"

So let me get this straight: Every single federal judge in every single jurisdiction in the U.S. is subject to a binding code of ethics — except the justices on the single most powerful court in the country?

Hello?

Everyone should take the time to read this amazing publication "High Risk Hustling: Payment Processors Sexual Proxies and Discrimination by Design" by the amazing and insightful Danielle Blunt, Gabriella Garcia, Lorelei Lee and Kate D'Adamo and Rachel Kuo which goes into exceptional detail about the financial discrimination that sex workers face and the wider implications of that policing.

The Florida legislature just proposed a higher education "reform" bill and it is terrifying 🧵

1. "post-tenure review of a
faculty member at any time"
2. "board of trustees may... review any faculty member's tenure status."
3. Faculty hiring done by the politically appointed board of trustees who are "not required to consider recommendations or opinions of faculty"

An enduring mystery with profound consequences for the sad state and sluggish pace of building public infrastructure in America has been resolved:

The reason it costs so much to build new public works projects is that states outsource their management to armies of consultants, rather than hiring and retaining the staff required for governments themselves to do it.

I have lots of respect for the investigative journalism that @Julia has done for many many years. But her first opinion piece in the NY Times, about Section 230 gets a ton of basic facts wrong, misunderstands the law, and proposes an unworkable and dangerous "fix" https://www.techdirt.com/2023/02/23/your-simple-solution-to-section-230-is-bad-julia-angwin-edition/

I just celebrated my second month on Mastodon on my own -- Boles.xyz -- instance, and each day grows brighter with new friends, and even more brilliant associations.

I thank you for being here, and for reading this, and I look forward to the next two months, and the next two months, and the next two...

My friend finishes my translation of Vadinda's tale of the woman who had frogs for hands and sits silent.
"What do you think?" I ask after a while.
"You must publish!"
"What? Nah."
"You built a time machine and learned dead languages to record lost folklore."
"Only as a hobby."

We've spent years reminding taxpayers that IRS won't initiate contact by text or email. What if they showed up unannounced instead? That happened recently. Here's what you need to know about in-person visits and your rights as a taxpayer. #tax #IRS

So I was mostly offline (and therefore, off Mastodon) for the past 3 days, and catching up with stuff now... and am NOT AT ALL SURPRISED that yet another centralized social media platform (Spoutable) is speed running the content moderation learning curve. This ALWAYS happens.

FWIW, it happens with fediverse instances too, but at least here we have choices, and it creates incentives for instance admins to be better.
